ting, drawing, sculpture,

sional background, materials

Papermaking:
Exhibit, Lecture

"Paper: Carrier of Mean-
ing," an exhibition of mixed
media constructions by led
Ramsay, professor of art at
the University of Michigan,
will open March 15 in The
Toledo Museum's Plough
Pavilion Gallery with a free
illustrated lecture by the ar-
tist at 2 p.m.
Presented by the Depart-
ment of Art of the University
of Toledo at the Toledo
Museum of Art, the
admission-free exhibition is
accompanied by a two-day
workshop on hand papermak-
ing and mixed media con-
structions on March 29 and
April 5. The exhibition will
feature 12 paper and mixed
media constructions which
continue the tradition of
paper as knowledge and is
about rethinking our ap-
proaches to the controlling of
nature and stepping back in-

to the role of existing as a
part of nature rather than
trying to dominate her.
In his March 15 illustrated
lecture, Mr. Ramsay will
discuss the sources for his
work in handmade paper,
derived from his experiences
in Chaco Canyon, Tasmania
and Uluru in the northern
territory of Australia. The
admission-free lecture will be
at 2 p.m. in the Museum's Lit-
tle Theater.
Mr. Ramsay received his
B.A., M.A., and M.F.A.
degrees from the University
of Iowa. Post-graduate study
in the United States and
abroad in Holland, Spain and
England broadened and
shaped his interest in both
classical and contemporary
applications of hand
papermaking.
Mr. Ramsay will conduct a
two-day workshop Image,
Material and Metaphor in
conjunction with the exhibi-
tion. Open to University of
Toledo art students, art
educators and museum
members interested in hand-
made paper and mixed media
constructions, the workshop
will focus on extending the
pragmatic knowledge of the
paper medium and link it to
the whimsy and fantasy of
the mixed-media object.
There is a fee.
For registration informa-
tion, call the Department of
Art, (419) 255-8000, ext. 366.
