Woodturners Exhibit At Sybaris Gallery Woodturners from the USA and Holland will exhibit their work at the Sybaris Gallery through March 21. The show is titled "The Wood Vessel." One of the woodturners is Ed Moulthrop. A part-time turner for many years, Mr. Moulthrop gave up his ar- chitectural practice 18 years ago and began turning full- time. Mr. Moulthrop turns figured tulipwood, choosing the grain and color variations carefully so they will be enhanced as the bowl takes shape. The large ovoid forms are highly polished, forming a perfect foil for the rich pat- terning in the wood. Another turner is Bruce Mitchell. His wood vessels in- dicate the direction that much contemporary wood- turning is taking — toward sculpture, and to juxtaposing precision with imprecisions, regularity with irregularity and smoothness with texture. Mr. Mitchell uses burls exten- sively in his work. Giles Gilson works with whatever material he feels will serve the object. He favors wood in combination with various metals, plastics and lacquers. He often creates pieces that have a pearlescent opaque color with geometric patterns and rounded forms strongly suggestive of the female body. Maria van Kesteren, one of three female turners in the show, is from Holland. The most important thing to Ms. van Kesteren is form — quite secondary is the fact that she uses wood as a medium. In order to avoid some of the in- herent disadvantages of wood, like discoloration, distortion of form through atmospheric influences and the sometimes too emphasized grain pat- terns that interfere with the intended shape, Ms. van Kesteren uses indigenous woods such as ash, lime and elm. These have little color and grain and can easily be Quilted maple bowl by J. Hosteler. bleached or stained black ser- ving as a conduit for the clean, logical forms the artist prefers. The only non-turner in the show is Peter Petrochko from Oxford, Conn. Mr. Petrochko "discovered" his method for making vessels with a band saw about 15 years ago, cut- ting angled, concentric rings from a board, then lami- nating them together in a tapering stack. The vessels have become Petrochko's signature product, with their striking colors, sculpted shapes and geometric patterns. In John Jordan's simple, yet elegant and refined work, the colors, patterns and shapes of his vessels complement each other and the fluted carving in some examples provides contrast for the hand and eye. Jay Hosteler points out how impressive wood's natural patterns can be by turning simple plates of highly figured quilted maple. Dennis Elliott is known for his large burl wood vessels and wall sculptures. Both Addie Draper and Bud Latven specialize in segmented, lathe-turned wood vessels. The process involves gluing various shapes and colors of wood together then turning them to create lively, infinite- ly variable designs. Sybaris Gallery is located at 301 W. Fourth, Royal Oak, 544-3388.
