In today's world of fewer
extended families, close con-
tact between children and
grandparents or other family
elders is often overlooked or
unavailable. To counter this,
interaction between the
generations — or "intergen-
erationol activities" must be
planned for and provided.

.

In the extended family, the
elderly members provided
special support in the learn-
ing and growth of the
children and youth. Lack of
contact with them has
resulted. in a decrease in
reassuring support during the
time children spend growing
and learning, less understan-
ding of aging and older per-
sons, an increase in children's
fear of aging and older per-
sons, loss of active grand-
parenting roles and the loss
of a sense of history and
continuity.

So, what can you do?
1. If grandparents are not
available, encourage your
children's secular or religious
school to promote in-
tergenerational interaction in
the classroom by using Senior
Adults as classroom aides,
storytellers, and tutors.

2. Structure special family
"history" times. Look at old
picture albums; learn the
stories behind the events and
people. Compile a family
cookbook. • Talk about holi-
day memories. Two resource
tools for guiding discussions
are Reflections by Ron and
Leora Isaacs and My Genera-
tions by Arthur Kurzweil.

3. Discuss feelings about
growing older. Read to-
gether How Does It Feel To
Be Old by Norma Farber and
You're Only Old Once by Dr.
Seuss.

4. For young children; read
books that show older peo-
ple as positive role models
such as Mondy's Grand-
mother; A Mitzvah is
Something Special; Bubbe,
Me and Memories; and
Nathan's Hannukoh Bargain.
