Ms. Torrence overcame a childhood speech impediment and started telling stories in 1972 as part of her job as a librarian. She has six award- winning albums, three award- winning television shows. Michigan Radio Airs Documentary "Spirits of the Present: The Legacy from North America," radio's first documentary series to celebrate the diverse cultures of Native America, will premiere on Michigan Radio Fridays 12:30 p.m. beginning March 6. The series will look at the life of today's Indians — their wisdom and humor, art and music, economics and educa- tion, religion and politics. Hosted by actress Tantoo Cardinal, with original music by singer-songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie, the 30-minute programs will air for 13 con- secutive weeks, as part of "lb- day's World."
