concessions in several
Miami hotels. Mr. Vogelfang
recalled that guests at the
spas included boxing champ
Rocky Marciano, who "came
in for daily workouts with

me"; former Teamsters'

Union President Jimmy
Hoffa; actors Zero Mostel,
Rock Hudson and Debbie
Reynolds; and opera singer
Jan Peerce, whom Leo once
asked to pipe down in the
shower.
Boxing challengers and
champions also came by for
a workout, including, in
1977, Max Schmeling - the
champion Mr. Vogelfang
had watched so intently
thousands of miles and a
world away as a boy.
All along, Mr. Vogelfang's
boxing training served him
well.
An early advocate of a
two-meal-a-day, no red meat
diet, of stretching exercises

and daily workouts, of mas-
sage, sauna and steam, his
message on physical and
mental fitness sounds quite
contemporary.
Mr. Vogelfang still works
out two hours a day in the
gym. And his wife said he
does not realize his own con-
siderable strength.
Early in his ninth decade,
Leo Vogelfang has his wife,
daughter Elena, son-in-law
Randy, and two grand-
children.
He also has that blue ring-
binder, which just sketches
the two lives of a small,
quick man with hard fists,
self-confidence, and the abil-
ity to get people to work
with him for their own
good. ❑
