Lose In Nice
Paris (JTA) -- Jean-Marie
Le Pen's far-right National
Front lost a local election
Feb. 23 in Nice, but by the
barest margin.
The party candidate took
49 percent of the vote in a
contest that pitted the far
right against the moderate
right wing. The elections
were a preview of the re-
gional balloting in four
weeks. Those who fear Le
Pen's racist politics will be
watching to see how he fares
against parties of the right
and center-right. They don't
seem to be gaining much
ground, as the narrow win in
Nice demonstrated.
Peace Activist
To Finish Sentence
Tel Aviv (JTA) -- Peace ac-
tivist Abie Nathan, who got
a 48-hour furlough from
Ramla prison Monday, said
he would not seek a pardon
from President Chaim Her-
zog because he refuses to ex-
press "contrition" for his ac-
tivities.
Nathan has served four-
and-a-half months of a 12-
month sentence for meeting
Yasir Arafat, chairman of
the Palestine Liberation
Organization, in contraven-
tion of Israeli law.
Unless he gets time off for
good behavior, Nathan will
spend another seven-and-a-
half months in prison.
