IDF Kills
Three Gunmen
Tel Aviv (JTA) — A pro-
longed gun battle in
southern Lebanon left three
members of the Islamic fun-
damentalist Hezbollah
movement dead and two
Israel Defense Force soldiers
slightly wounded.
The encounter occurred
near Barashit village, less
than a mile north of the edge
of the area Israel calls its
security zone. A patrol from
the IDF's elite Givati
Brigade encountered a heav-
ily armed group of men mov-
ing in the direction of the
Israeli border.
The ensuing exchange of
fire lasted for three hours.
The dead infiltrators were
members of Hezbollah, ac-
cording to reports from Leb-
anon.
Sabotage equipment was
found on their bodies along
with rocket-propelled
grenades and LAW
shoulder-fired missiles.They
are believed to have been on
the way to attack an Israeli
border village.
A sapper of the Israeli-
backed South Lebanon
Army was killed Saturday
while attempting to disman-
tle a land mine near H'nin
village, in the western sector
of the security zone.
Israeli and SLA artillery
shelled Shi'ite villages north
of the zone in retaliation for
both incidents.
Churches Blast
Mistreatment
Geneva (JTA) — The heads
of eight Eastern and
Western churches in
Jerusalem and a monastic
order have issued a joint
statement harshly condemn-
ing Israel for its alleged
mistreatment of the Pales-
tinian population and what
they say is denial of access to
holy places to members of
non-Judaic faiths.
The statement, which
drew an angry response from
Jerusalem Mayor Teddy
Kollek, was signed last mon-
th by the Latin, Greek Or-
thodox and Armenian
patriarchs, who are the offi-
cial guardians of Christian
holy sites in the city.
They were joined by the
heads of the Coptic, Syrian,
Anglican, Lutheran and
Greek Catholic churches and
the leader of the Roman
Catholic Franciscan Order,
according to church officials.
Their complaints included
the recent occupation of
Arab homes in the Old City
by Jewish settlers.
