me, this year, it was like
welcoming people into your
own home."
Rabbi Polish added that
the Glazer Institute has
helped the non-Jewish
clergy change a negative
image of Judaism, a
medieval one that was
characterized in earlier
years.
He also said the most im-
portant breakthrough for
the institute this year was
the Moslem participation.
"The challenges for the
Jewish and Islamic com-
munities is to recognize that
we have much in common,"
said Rabbi Polish. "They are
now what we were a genera-
tion ago, an immigrant
community. We share the
life in this society and we
must struggle to overcome
the politics of the Middle
East that do come between
us. I am proud of us for in-

Our immigration policy dis-
tinguishes between political
refugees, whom we welcome,
and economic refugees, whom
we deport. In real life, the
distinction is nearly impossi-
ble to make .. .
Even if we could determine
which refugee was driven by
political forces and which by
economic, as far as the impact
on the refugees, the distinc-
tion does not make any sense.
One refugee will be rescued
from political oppression, to
find safety in the United
States; the other will be
returned to Haiti to starve. It
seems just as bad to starve as
to suffer political oppression.
The distinction also does
not make sense as far as the
impact on the United States.
Refugees, both economic and
political, have built this coun-
try. Over our history, have
political refugees contributed
more than economic refugees?

Rabbi Glazer would have
been honored and thrilled by
this year's large turnout,
which for this community
was absolutely significant.
But like Rabbi Polish, he'd
be the first to say that this
get-together should hardly
be the sum total of
ecumenical relations. It's a
wonderful beginning, and a
barometer that, hopefully,
next year we'll be able to use
to see just how far we've all
come. ❑

With many of them, I have

Dr. Tanenbaum made it
clear that the Glazer In-
stitute was a reason to
celebrate. Rabbi Polish said
it's now up to the par-
ticipants to reinforce the
general attitude of trust and
understanding.
If one were to accept the
new as offered by the Free
Press, then the hacking to
death of three Israeli soldiers
is not a threat to the Middle
East peace. In fact, it is so
unimportant that it did not
make Page One of Sunday's
edition (Feb. 16). Nor section
A, nor section B, nor section
C. In fact I couldn't find any
reference to the incident in
the newspaper.
The very next day, pro-
minently spotlighted on Page
One as a very serious threat
to Middle East peace is the
assassination of a terrorist
leader who has vigorously in-
cited terrorist actions against
Israel. This is the same ter-
rorist who has been directly
linked to the death of
American Col. Higgins and
the bombing in Lebanon that
killed over 240 U.S. Marines
as well as having directed
many other acts of interna-
tional terrorism.
If this were the only inci-
dent of this kind it could be
considered a fluke. The facts
are, there exists in the Free
Press editorial staff an anti-
Israel bias that determines
how all news relating to the
Middle East is presented .. .

Mideast Peace
The current escalation of
violence in the Mideast con-
cerns us as it would any fami-
ly. Many of our relatives live
in the region. None will
benefit from the peace talks
being derailed. We deplore
the violence on all sides and
ask all who desire peace to
continue the process of
discussion.
