too would be expected to live
at his level. Instead, the Jews
rebelled and sought a more
physical substitute expressed
through the calf. The calf or
ox represented a new physical
intermediary between man
and God's natural world
(Ramban, Rabbi Yehuda
Halevi). The Jewish people
did not, as a whole, worship
the calf; only 3,000 Jews of 3
million actually worshipped
the calf, but the Jews did try
to find a physical substitute
for Moses in order to justify
their desire to live a more
physical existence.
Today, we Jews also try to
deny the spiritual realities of
life. Impatience is an unfor-
tunate hallmark of the
Western world. Technology
has become our spiritual
substitute . . . in a sense, our
modern day golden calf. We
live in an era requiring
physical comforts and conve-
nience. Our clothes, food and
entertainment come prepack-
aged and ready-made. With a
touch of a dial or a button we
can communicate and trans-
mit instantaneously. We can
wash dirtied laundry and
dishes or blow snow from our
drive with the mere turn of a
dial. Our modern techno-
logical existence has trained
us that effort and discomfort
are to be avoided, that
waiting is a waste of time and
that physical, temporal
pleasures are the means to a
satisfying existence.
This week's Torah portion
sends a different message:
that patience, physical control
and spirituality are the vir-
tues of life and are rewarded
with eternity.
