a red kaffiah. In broken
Hebrew, he identifies
himself as a Kushi
Ivri(Black Hebrew); he
calls the Jews of Oak Park
Yehudim levan, white
Jews.

Affixed to walls, shelves
and counters are handmade,
wooden Stars of David, and
several Israeli-made brass
knick-knacks with religious
themes: seder plates and
Torah scrolls.

WHERE IT STARTED

More than 950,000 Jews
followed in the footsteps of
a man named Chapman
Abraham.
A trader, Abraham
became Detroit's first
known Jewish resident
when he left Montreal and
settled here in 1762. Born
in Germany, he traded
gunpowder, wine and
brandy and lived in Detroit
until his death in 1783.
Author Robert Rockaway
recounts this story about
Abraham in his book, The
Jews of Detroit:
"A year after his arrival
in the settlement, the In-
dians of the Ohio Valley
rose up against the British
under the leadership of the
Ottawa chief, Pontiac.

"Abraham, apparently
unaware of the start of the
hostilities, was transpor-
ting five boats of salable
goods from Niagara to
Detroit when the Indians
captured him. They tied
him to a' stake and
prepared to torture him
first and then burn him.
"As was their custom,
they allowed him a last
drink before setting him
ablaze. Unbeknownst to
Abraham, the beverage
was boiling hot. He raised
the brew to his lips, drank,
and, scalded, screamed in
pain and threw the bowl
and its contents into the
face of the Indian who
brought it.
"Believing this to be the
act of a madman, the In-
dians set him free."
Today, a small plaque
donated by the Jewish
Historical Society of Mich-
igan hangs in honor of
Chapman Abraham. The
plaque is located on the left
as one enters the library at
the Maple-Drake Jewish
Community Center. 111
