during the summer. Later,
Bancroft took Wilson into his
Royal Oak home.
"Coach Braun became in-
volved with Theron's story
and he saw a chance to help
him," Bancroft said. "He
looked at him as a person,
and Theron picked up on that.
Most of the other coaches
were jocking him! as Theron
would say, but Coach Braun
didn't do that.
"He knew that Theron
would probably be a Proposi-
tion 48 student, but it didn't
matter.
"There was a tendency for
most of the other coaches to
look at Theron as just a
basketball player and that
was their downfall, as far as
we were concerned. Coach
Braun was too smart for that.
He was stubborn about it.
"Coach Braun is very
disciplined, a non-nonsense
guy, and he expects that
discipline from his players,
both on the basektball court
and in the classroom. His
coaching staff has the same
philosophy. Coach Braun has
taken some marginal players
and students and made them
successful!"
Basketball has been a big
part of Braun's life; make no
mistake about that. Among
other things, it has given him
the opportunity to travel
across the country and it was
the vehicle for his nearly
month-long trip to Israel for
the Maccabiah Games.
His internationally-inex-
perienced team was the sur-
prise of the Maccabiah
basketball tournament, los-
ing only to Israel. Before the
competition, Braun and his
players toured the country for
about two weeks.
"We went to every corner,"
he said. "It was a great ex-
perience!'
But basketball isn't
everything for Braun, just
like he tries to make sure it
doesn't dominate his players'
lives. A big reason he keeps
the game in perspective in his
academic background. Braun
earned an undergraduate
teaching degree in English at
the University of Wisconsin
in 1975 and a master's degree
in counseling from Siena
Heights College in 1980
while he was the basketball
coach there.
Braun took over a fledgling
program at Siena Heights in
1977 and he compiled a
148-103 record in eight years.
He joined the Eastern
Michigan staff as an assistant
coach in August 1985 and he
was named interim coach on
Jan. 15, 1986.
In 1987-88, only his second
full season at the helm,
Braun led Eastern Michigan

to the MAC championship
and its first berth in the
NCAA tournament. He was
named the MAC Coach of the
Year
Coming into this season,
Braun's career record at
Eastern Michigan was
102-66. That mark probably
will continue to slide toward
the .500 mark as the Eagles
finish the year, but Braun
won't complain too much. For
him, there are other numbers
which are just as impor-
tant.111
