Features Israeli

Habatat/Shaw Gallery will
exhibit the work of four ar-
tists, Scott Chamberlin,
Bruno Laverdiere, Michael
Lucero and Anat Shiftan in
an exhibition titled
"Sculpture and Drawings:
Four Perspectives" through
Feb. 22.
This four-person exhibition
will focus on drawings and
sculpture from each artist's
current body of work. In each
case, equal emphasis and
energy are placed on two-
dimensional and three-
dimensional bodies of work.
The drawings are integral to
the making of the sculpture,
and the sculpture is integral
to the making of the
drawings.
Born in 1955 in Jerusalem,
Israel, Anat Shiftan lived and
studied art in both the United
States and Israel. In 1980 she
received a B.A. in philosophy
and English literature from
Hebrew University in
Jerusalem. She then decided
to pursue a degree in
ceramics attending the
Bezalel Academy of Art and
Design. In 1983 she went to
New York to study painting at
the Art Students League com-
ing to Michigan in 1984 to
pursue her M.F.A. at the
Cranbrook Academy of Art
where she studied under
June Kaneko.

In the past, Ms. Shiftan's
work has been primarily in-
stallation oriented, combin-
ing floor elements and two
dimensional works to form
one multi-elemental piece.
The forms incorporated into
her work have always been
quite minimal. The glazes she
uses complement the abstract
forms, their color and surface
quality imbuing the works
with a quiet, comtemplative
calm.
Gallery hours are Tuesday
through Saturday, 10 a.m-6
p.m. For information, call Jeff
Guido, 851-8767.
