Tevye.
While she did some plays
in 1941, Ms. Orloff says she
got her best role in 1942.
"That's when I got mar-
ried," she says, shooting a
smile at her husband across
the table.
Ms. Orloff put her career
on hold at that point, follow-
ing her husband in his
travels, first in the military
and, then, as an executive;
he wound up becoming vice
president of sales and
marketing for a prominent
watch company.
At the age of 40, Ms. Orloff
felt it was time for a slight
shift in direction. Happily
married, she decided to
follow up on an age-old in-
terest in art.
When her daughter was 3
years old — the couple also
have a son —Ms. Orloff
carved a new niche for
herself as sculptor, winning
a scholarship to the Penn-
sylvania Academy of the
Fine Arts. "Fortunately,"
she says, smiling at Mickey,
"I didn't have to worry about
earning a livelihood."
She has earned con-
siderable renown, with
sculptures and com.misions
of her work in watercolors
and oils.
Ms. Orloff is the picture of
happiness, but bring up
other films dealing with the
Jewish experience and the
smile turns upside down.
Which is exactly the direc-
tion some films have taken
in depicting the Jewish ex-
perience, she says. White
Palace, with its talkative
and tacky Jewish
characters, and Avalon, a
movie about the immigrant
experience that "seemed to
make monsters out of Jewish
people," are not exactly pop-
ular rentals at the Orloff
household.
But the actress is sold on
Tevye,if not as much on its
musical-movie mishpachah
from 1970 Fiddler.
"I loved the music in
Fiddler, but I couldn't relate
to the character," she says of
the Hollywood-hyped Chava.
Fiddler is no match for
Tevye, says Ms. Orloff; the
earlier movie, she says, ex-
tols "the sweetness and
truth about the love of fami-
ly."
Is that a lesson for the
'90s? "A lesson for the '90s?"
asks Ms. Orloff, shaking her
head. "That is a lesson for
forever." ❑
