a) o. E 0 0) 0 island, attended by such notables as Kendall Nottage, a member of Parliament. The dedication was a front page story in the newspapers of Nassau and Freeport and also was covered by the Jewish Floridian; Freeport is just 76 miles east of Palm Beach, Fla. In the synagogue office, Mr. Turner gets out the news- paper account from the Dec. 9, 1974 issue of the Tribune, published in nearby Nassau. "Mr. Nottage said the building showed the faith of the Jewish people in the Bahamas," wrote the reporter. "And it was right that the Jewish faith, too, should take its place in the community." It has kept that key place in the community. Because this synagogue is on an island where tourism is the biggest industry, it functions as much for tourists as for residents. On a typical Friday even- ing, those attending services include the few year-round Jewish residents, the "snow- birds" who live here for the winter months, a few Baha- mians — Mr. Turner, for in- stance, has invited members of his Rotary Club to services — and a number of tourists. They come from far-flung places. The synagogue's guest book is signed by visitors from Australia, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, Argen- tina, Israel. "We've had visitors from all over the world," says Mr. Turner, a retired musician from Hart- ford, Conn., who bought a home in Freeport 15 years ago and lives here each year for five months. In such a small congrega- tion, he serves both as lay rabbi and as president — and sometimes as a one-man welcoming committee for Jewish tourists, too. Even though Shabbat services don't begin until the tourist season starts in November, when he and his wife Edi ar- rive in October, they faith- fully go to the synagogue on Friday evenings. "Even if we don't have enough people for a minyan, we want to be there for the tourists," he says. Besides welcoming tourists to services and to the Oneg Shabbat held afterwards, the small congregation has varied activities, including an elaborate brunch every March sponsored by the sisterhood and attended by many natives as well as con- gregants and tourists. During Passover, members share a community seder at a local restaurant, the Ruby Swiss. Owner George Wipf, a Swiss native who's not Jewish, arranges for the food.
