Spike Lee:
Coming to U-M- .
ago and is being paid a
$15,000 honorarium.
"His accomplishments
cover a range that ignores
racial boundaries," Mr.
Bernstein said. "Everyone
knows his work."
One of the co-sponsors of
the lecture will be U-M's
Hillel Foundation, which
will chip in $2,000 for the
event. Since Mr. Lee is ex-
pected to attract a large
crowd, Hillel is confident
that the proceeds will cover
the costs.
"Our thinking was
twofold," said David Glaser,
director of Hillel's board of
directors. "Hillel has made
an effort to bring in diverse
cultural programming. Plus,
we wanted to reach out to
the black student commun-
ity."
Mr. Glaser, a third-year
U-M law student, said there
were concerns that Mr. Lee's
portrayal of two Jewish
nightclub owners in Blues
was stereotyping, but
Hillel's directors concluded
that Mr. Lee is not an anti-
Semite.
"People are very quick to
charge him with anti-
Semitism," he said. "An an-
ti-Semitic movie character
does not an anti-Semite
make."
In November, a U-M cam-
pus speech by the Rev. All
Sharpton was highlighted by
sharp divisions between
black and Jewish students.
Relations between the two
groups are likely to become
even more strained when Dr.
Leonard Jeffries speaks on
the campus later this month.
Mr. Bernstein, who
organized the Sharpton
event for UAC, said he
hoped Mr. Lee would not stir
the same kind of controver-
sy.
"This is a program that
will bring people together,"
he said.
