Coach Sandy Lubieniecki
at crosstown rival North Far-
mington, also in the Western
Lakes, feels that she, too, has
a good team this year.
Now in her 14th year at the
Raiders' helm, Lubieniecki
consistently fields good teams
and says this year's crew is
benefiting from the strong
leadership of senior captains
Karen Miller, Karen Seremet
and Sarah Lungren.
Of Miller, the coach says,
"For her height, Karen Miller
is the finest player I've ever
had. She's short (about
5-foot-4), but she's an out-
standing hitter. She takes full
advantage of what she has
and really powers the ball
over the net. For a short girl
to excell on the front row, it's
exceptional?'

however, Grinbergs

digs, on her way to

player who's also an outstand-
ing server — she leads the
team in aces — and defensive
player, is a triplet. Her sister
Tracey is a second-year varsi-
ty volleyballer and brother
Kevin is on the Raider hockey
team.
Seremet, also is a fine
server, was perfect in all 110
serves in the first seven mat-
ches and is a top setter and
assists the leader. Outside
hitter Lungren, another
third-year varsity member,
leads in kills.
Birmingham Groves of the
MSAA, described by third-
year coach Trisha Smith as
being "a very young team,"
defeated Troy Athens and
Royal Oak Dondero in league
play and Hazel Park in non-
conference action. The early
league loss was to Lahser.
"Their work ethic is a lot
stronger than last year's,"
says Smith about her team.
"They're real scrappy and
have a lot of potential. They
can surprise a lot of teams."
The Falcons also have some
height — several players are
between 5-9 and 5-11.
Starters include senior co-
captains Andrea Davis and
Jan Ruggles; sophomores
Karin Denholm (5-11 setter)
and Jennifer Madvin (back
row); and junior Krista Finn-
Woodburn and 5-10 freshman
Marce Trevino, both of whom,
like Ruggles, are all-around
players.
Second-year Bloomfield
Hills Andover coach Holly
Hatcher says despite the
Barons' 3-14 record, "they're
hard-working kids, for the
most part. We've got to get
them to have confidence in
themselves."
Hatcher, who played on a
nationally ranked Oakland
University team, says the
Barons, who've beaten South-
field twice and Mount Carmel
once, have been losing close
ones, such as the 17-15 over-
time loss to Ferndale Monday
night. The team is 2-10 in the
Southeastern Michigan
Association.
Toughest servers, she says,
are seniors Courtney Kalbfeld
and Lisa Greenfield, both of
whom "serve a lot of aces."
Kalbfeld is a middle blocker
in her third varsity season
and outside hitter Greenfield
is a second-year ' varsity
player.
Greenfield, Carolyn Kang
and Jeannie Chang were
elected tri-captains by their
teammates. The team's other
seniors are Andrea Yun, Cin-
dy Kim and Larisa Lads.
First-year Southfield-Lath-
rup coach Kelly O'Reilly, a
1987 S-L graduate who
played on two co-champion-
ship teams there and who co-
captained Kalamazoo College
to fourth place nationally last
year, hopes some of those win-
ning ways will rub off on the
Chargers in the second half of
the season. "We could sur-
prise some teams," she says.
Assisting her in coaching is
an S-L teammate, Debbie
Goldstein, who's also the
junior varsity coach.
"We beat Southfield for the
city championship and Grosse
Pointe University Liggett in
a tournament" but are strug-
gling at 2-19 overall and 0-8
in the MSAA, she notes.
However, some of the losses
were to tough opponents like
West Bloomfield, Rochester
Adams and Farmington Hills
Mercy.
Co-captains are Elin Bopp,
a veteran setter, and Coryn
Saltsman, an outside hitter.
Other starters are letter-
winners Tracee Bowie, Stacy
Baugh and Meagan Clancy,
plus sophomore Tiffany
Turner. Bowie, 5-9, and
Turner, 5-8, are both middle
hitters.
"They all have a good at-
titude," Coach O'Reilly says of
the team whose players saw
limited action during a
dismal 1-13 league season
last year. "We work a lot on
fundamentals."
At Southfield High, second-
year head coach Tracey
