Campaign Close-Up:
Part Of Community

Editor's Note: The lives of
thousands of Jews here
and overseas are touched by
the agencies of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit. This is one of a
series that illustrates how
Federation agencies, sup-
ported by our contributions
to the Allied Jewish Cam-
paign, help people.
For Steve Chudnow, it
was a simple request for
help.
The computer science
major's skills were needed
to produce a flyer for a
United Jewish Appeal/
Campaign program at the
B'nai B'rith Hillel Founda-
tion on Wayne State Uni-
versity's campus.
"The co-chairman of the
UJA/Campaign asked me
to assist him. Then he ask-
ed me for more and more
help," said Steve. One
thing led to another.
He now co-chairs the
campus UJA/Campaign
with Ilana Stollman. Us-
ing Hillel as a meeting
place for UJA/Campaign is
but one reason Steve
comes to Hillel these days.
"When I'm not in class,
I'm usually found here."
An Oak Park resident,
Steve, 26, began his
studies at WSU following
four years in the army,
where he was a com-
munications specialist. "I
came to Hillel because
there isn't much out there
for Jews on campus," he
said.
"Wayne State University
is an impersonal place, and
it can be pretty lonely for
Jewish students," said
Rabbi Eli Finkelman,
director of B'nai B'rith
Hillel Foundation of
Metropolitan Detroit. "We
have a place here that's
welcoming for Jewish
students, a place where
people know your name
and care about you."
At Hillel, students can
eat a kosher lunch,
prepared in the kitchen of
Hillel's sixth floor offices
in the Student Center
Building.
Some watch TV and
some use rooms to study.
Many play chess and card
games. "We generally use
Hillel as a place to
socialize. But we also get
information on Jewish
topics and Israel," said
Steve.
Hillel sponsors Jewish-
content programs, such as

a Talmud class on
Thursdays. The center
hosts students in its suk-
kah, sponsors a Chanukah
party and passes out
hamantashen on Purim.
"Our goal is to enhance
Jewish life on campus,"
Rabbi Finkelman said.
Through various groups,
Hillel encourages Jewish
students to be politically
active on Israel's behalf,
but such groups span the
political spectrum. "We
want to foster student
groups of any flavor."
"Without Hillel, most
Jews would just go home
after classes and not have
any place to express their
Judaism together on cam-
pus," said Steve.
As headquarters for
B'nai B'rith Hillel Founda-
tion of Metropolitan
Detroit, the Wayne State
University center houses
the Maurice Zeiger
Memorial Library, as well
as a kosher lunch counter
and meeting rooms.
At Oakland University,
the Jewish Students
Organization/Hillel is
located in Oakland Center.
Its programs include dis-
cussions, social events.
The Jewish Student
Association for Oakland
Community College and
Lawrence Technological
University is based at
OCC's Orchard Ridge
Campus. In addition to of-
fering information on
Jewish life, the association
runs a mentoring program
and hosts bagel brunches.
The Allied Jewish Cam-
paign also supports Hillels
at the University of
Michigan and Michigan
State University.

Hillel Foundation ac-
tivities, call Rabbi
Finkelman, 577-3459.
