Year's Best
Headline?

Moment magazine has
rolled out what may be the
most ironically droll
headline for a story on cir-
cumcision: "Why Not the
Earlobe?"
And why not the earlobe,
indeed? The author, an-
thropologist Howard
Eilberg-Schwartz, states,
"In exposing the male organ
by removing the foreskin,
circumcision is a graphic
representation of a boy's
emerging masculinity . . ."
"Circumcision," wrote Mr.
Eilberg-Schwartz, "unlike
cutting the earlobe, has the
advantage of referring to the
content of the covenant . . ."
Although Egyptians and
other African people practic-
ed circumcision before the
Jews did, they often per-
formed the ritual closer to
puberty. For the ancient
Jews, says Mr. Eilberg-
Schwartz, "entrance into the
covenant was not a mature
reflective decision of adult
life. Entrance into the
covenantal community was
a privilege of being part of
the genealogy of Abraham.
Circumcision on the eighth
day of life means that the
child has no choice about be-
ing a member of the
covenantal community."

Atty. Kunstler:
Big Mouth

William Kunstler is not a
nice Jewish boy — at least,
the profile of him in Vanity
Fair does not make him out
to be especially nice. Honest,
tireless, true to his left-wing
principles, yes; nice, no.
The New York lawyer got
a national reputation in the
1960s when he became the
"movement lawyer" for
everyone from the Chicago
Seven and Martin Luther
King to Malcolm X. In
December, he got an ac-
quittal for El Sayyid Nosair,
who was charged with kill-
ing Rabbi Meir Kahane,
founder of the Jewish
Defense League (JDL).
During the trial, Mr.
Kunstler had embraced the
alleged killer and kissed him
on the cheek, eliciting a gasp
from JDL members in the
courtroom.
"What was it about that
kiss that made it so incen-
diary, so transgressive?"
asks writer Ron Rosenbaum.
"I sensed that what the JDL
contingent objected to was
. . . the blessing implied by
the kiss, a blessing for the
bloody deed Nosair was
accused of." Fl
