Leonard Jeffries
Continued from Pagel
African history as an essen-
tial part of any education be-
cause he feels most human
accomplishments can be
traced to Africa and African
ideas. Once, he said,
"There's only one human
race and it's the African
race. Everything else is a
mutation of African genes."
"Dr. Jeffries has little
tolerance for anything
Western, and his agenda is
not the inclusion of African-
based studies in education,
but to make it supreme, and
every other inquiry of study
inferior. To him, the in-
clusive notion of a
multicultural education is
`mental genocide,' " writes
American Jewish Corn-
mittee program specialist
Kenneth Stern in "Dr. Jef-
fries and the Anti-Semitic
Branch of the Afrocentric
Movement."
Mr. Stern says that many
blacks support Dr. Jeffries
because they favor making
school curricula more Afro-
centric.
"Black contributions to
American society are
overlooked and black history
is ignored," he said. "For
many, Dr. Jeffries expresses
an honest and well-meaning
belief that black ac-
complishments must be
studied. It's more complex
than inviting him for his an-
ti-Semitism."
This, at least, appears to
be the case at Michigan.
"There are many alter-
natives to many issues,"
said Cone Morman, an ad-
ministrative assistant with
the U-M Black Studies
Union (BSU). "There is
nothing wrong with hearing
another one."
Ms. Morman added that
Dr. Jeffries' views are not
necessarily shared by the
BSU.
Still, some students have
been highly critical of BSU's
decision.
"I don't think they did this
in a malicious way," said
Rebecca Hoelting, a U-M

Hillel's David Glaser, who
chairs the board of directors.
"That, however, doesn't af-
fect our position anymore
than it does affect the uni-
versity community as a
whole."
University officials said
that they would not keep the
BSU from holding the event,
although they are inquiring
about security for the
speech, said Walt Harrison,
U-M administration
spokesman.
"None of us want to pre-
judge what he's going to
say," Mr. Harrison said.
"But his track record is very
worrisome. It is a matter of
some concern at a university
which tries to bring people
together." D

senior. "But I don't feel he is
the best person the BSU
could have brought for Black
History Month."
Ms. Hoelting is a
facilitator in a class on
black-Jewish relations in the
university's political science
department. She said blacks
and Jews in the class have
not discussed Dr. Jeffries
yet, but that discussion
would occur soon.
U-M's Jewish student
community has not staged
an official protest of the Jef-
fries invitation, since the
Hillel Foundation's board of
directors sees the speech as a
university, not black-
Jewish, issue.
"Leonard Jeffries is not
preaching tolerance," said

D
irector Spike Lee,
whose films have ex-
plored race in
original and sometimes con-
troversial ways, will speak
at the University of Mich-
igan on April 2.
Mr. Lee has made a
number of successful films,
including She's Gotta Have
It, Do The Right Thing and
Mo' Better Blues. The latter
received criticism from some
Jews for its portrayal of two
Jewish nightclub owners as
greedy, accented and conniv-
ing.
Mr. Lee is being brought to
campus by the University
Activities Center, a student-
run group that coordinates
campus events. Mark Berns-
tein, a U-M senior who is
running the event, said Mr.
Lee was invited two years
