"The city did nothing while
Jewish property and lives
were hurt."
Rabbi Spielman criticized
New York City Mayor David
Dinkins for not attending
Mrs. Lapine's funeral. "This
was a heinous crime, in
which Mrs. Lapine died
defending her honor in front
of her young child," he said.
"There is no excuse for not
coming; not feeling the sen-
sitivity for the family. For
not feeling the blame."
The rabbi said the
Chasidic community is
relieved that Mr. LaFond
was found and arrested
quickly. "We demonstrated
peacefully outside the police
station to make sure this
wasn't left on the back
burner," Rabbi Spielman
said. "Within 48 hours, La-
Fond was caught.
"I think it was easier this
time, because the issue of
bias was not really there,"
he said. "The police were
slower to react with Yankel
Rosenbaum because they
were afraid to upset the
black community."
Rabbi Chaim Moshe
Bergstein, director of Bais
Chabad of Farmington Hills,
also sees the Lapine murder
as an isolated incident.
"This was an individual al-
ready known to the police,"
he said. "It's not being taken
as a racial attack."
Rabbi Bergstein said the
Lubavitch community will
continue to maintain its
presence in Crown Heights.
"There is a holiness to a
neighborhood where Jews
gather and practice their re-
ligion," he said. "Also, our
leaving would destroy mill-
ions invested in our in-
frastructure and leave
behind the elderly and poor,
who cannot afford to
relocate."
Despite frequent family
prodding, the Whites say
they have no plans to leave.
"We can't run, not for this
reason," Mrs. White said.
"The pros to this community
still outweigh the cons. If
you could see how this com-
munity comes together in a
situation like this .. .
"We've had a real bad year
here," Mrs. White con-
tinued. "Our families think
we should leave, but they
understand we have our life
here." 0
