Of Primary Importance!

sonal problem. Israel, he
said, is not only threatened
externally, but internally.
"I can not think of many
countries that experience
life with such a tangible and
tragic density of fear," he
said. What has occurred,
however, is that Israelis
have internalized that fear
and transmitted it into a
"banality of evil." Although
careful not to compare the
Holocaust to the Israeli oc-
cupation of the West Bank,
he said that the Nazis, too,
had prodded humanity's
willingness to go along with
an inherently evil system,
provided it was a system.
"There was something in
us that makes us wonderful
collaborators in every
system," he said. "Most of us
are moral people, but there
is a moment when we decide
not to decide."

Blacks, Jews
Is Program Topic

"Black/Jewish Relations —
From Civil Rights To Crown
Heights" will be the topic of
the second event in the four-
part Jewish Federation Young
Adult Division Political
Awareness Series, 7:30 p.m.
Feb. 26, at Adat Shalom
Synagogue.
The program will feature a
national perspective by Diana
Aviv, associate executive vice
chairman of the National
Jewish Community Relations
Advisory Council and discus-
sion of local concerns by Ber-
nard Parker Jr., chairman of
the New Detroit race rela-
tions committee. David Gad-
Harf, executive director of the
Jewish Community Council,
will be moderator for the
session.
Ms. Aviv's work with
NJCRAC, the advisory coor-
dinating body of the Jewish
communal relations field,
helps identify and act on
issues of concern to the
organized Jewish community.
A native of South Africa, she
was active in her Jewish com-
munity's Zionist Federation
and, through her Jewish af-
filiations, worked to oppose
apartheid.
Mr. Parker is executive
director and co-founder of
Operation Get Down, a
Detroit-based organization
that provides clothing, food,
day care and recreational ac-
tivities to some 2,000 low-
income families and seniors
every week. A Wayne County
Commissioner, his ties with
the Jewish community in-
clude a project with Temple
Israel that pairs temple
members with residents of
Detroit's Wilshire neighbor-
hood.
