Leonard Jeffries, who last summer said Jewish movie moguls and the Mafia conspire to denigrate blacks, will speak at the University of Mich- igan later this month. U-M's Black Student Union invited Dr. Jeffries to speak as part of its Black History Month celebrations. Other activities include several forums, a film, a tal- ent show and a salute to Malcolm X. Dr. Jeffries will be speak- ing on "Media Lynching: the destruction of African people," 7 p.m. Feb. 18 in an open lecture at the Michigan Union. Last summer, Dr. Jeffries, who is chairman of the Afro- American Studies Depart- ment at City College of New York, gave a speech where he not only made his charge against Jewish filmmakers, but he also said that Jews fi- nanced and supported the slave trade. Dr. Jeffries is also a leading proponent of the Afrocentric academic movement. He has repeated- ly called for the study of Continued on Page 26 Chasidim Shaken By NY Murder AMY J. The Lubavitch mother of four young children was stabbed more than 30 times in the chest and neck, accor- ding to the medical ex- aminer. She was discovered at about 4 p.m. Feb. 6 by her 5-year-old son, Avrumi. When he couldn't get into the house, the little boy tried a neighbor, who looked through a window and saw Mrs. Lapine's body lying on the living room couch. Also that night, a Jewish couple was beaten and mugged three blocks from the Lapines' home. Page 22 F ederation officials an- nounced Tuesday that they had sold the Fred Butzel Building in downtown Detroit to the Waycor Development Co. The purchase price was not disclosed. Waycor is owned by Donald Barden, who also owns Barden Cablevision. The Butzel Building, at 163 Madison, was the home to the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit for 40 years. In December, Federa- tion moved its main ad- ministrative offices to the Max Fisher Building on Telegraph Road near Maple Road. The Butzel sale was approved by Federation's real estate committee two months after Waycor made an offer on the building. ' Discussions between Fed- eration officials and Mr. Barden had been going on for about a year. Some office space in the building will be leased by Waycor to the Federation, the Jewish Community Council, the Jewish Labor Committee and the Ameri- can Jewish Committee. 111
