He began as a cryptographer in the Army, decoding codes, and then attended the Harvard Business School to train statistical control officers. One classmate was former Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara. He then spent three years overseas in England and France. After his service career, he decided to attend Columbia Law School. He finished in an accelerated program for veterans. He refers to that part of his life as his "Torts and Diapers Period" because his two children were born. He entered private practice in the Penobscot Building and concentrated on constitutional law and civil liberties. During his work with the ACLU, he met Charles King, dean of the Detroit College of Law. In 1961, he was asked to join the faculty. That same year, he was elected a delegate to the Michigan Constitution- al Convention, representing Detroit along with team members Dick Austin, Jack Faxon and Melvin Nord. He was co-author of key pro- visions of the Michigan Con- stitution of 1963 that prohibited racial and religious discrimination. "We ran as an interracial team and made a contribu- tion expressing diversity and pluralism in our society, as well as the friendship and cooperation between blacks and Jews." Professor Norris has published many books including Mr. Justice Murphy and the Bill of Rights and most recently Education for Popular Sovereignty Through Imple- menting the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. He also expresses strong feelings on the Constitution in his poetry books. An American Mural, a collection of his poetry, will be published imminently. He corresponds with the well-known American poet Archibald MacLeish. One of Professor Norris' poems "Liberty Bell" hangs in the Independence National Parks' Administration Bulding in Philadelphia.
