PASSOVER IS COMING SOON!!!

Continued from Page 6

Hebrew School Division of the
Agency for Jewish Education
is about to cease operating —
as a result of a decision by the
Board of Governors of the
Jewish Federation of Metro-
politan Detroit.
The Federation plans to
turn the operation of an after-
noon school system, at the
elementary level, over to the
individual synagogues. It is
estimated that this move
would save the Federation
about $250,000 annually. Of
the present U.H.S. affiliates
Adat Shalom is probably the
only synagogue that could af-
ford to replace U.H.S.
However, it will take time to
acquire the skills necessary to
organize and deliver a quali-
ty Hebrew school education.
In the interim, students who
are unaffiliated will lose out,
students caught in the system
during its adjustment period
will lose out, teachers and
staff who have worked in the
current system will lose out
and are already suffering in
this period of uncertainty.
Synagogues that are not as
large or as strong as Adat
Shalom face even greater
difficulties.
Our children are our future.
We have a responsibility to
reach out and provide a
Jewish education to as many
of our children as possible.
The Giles plan is a step back-
ward. It will mean that some
of our children will not
receive the education to
which they are entitled. At a
time in our history when we
are losing members of our
community to intermarriage
and a decline in the birth
rate, we cannot afford to
neglect the education of a
single Jewish child. In its at-
tempt to save money, Federa-
tion will cause us to lose out
in the long-run.
While U.H.S. has been far
from perfect it will not be
easily duplicated. It has
almost 75 years of experience
in the administration and
delivery of an after-school
Hebrew education. It is the
only afternoon program in
the country that provides
eight hours of education. It
provides teacher training. It
requires its teachers to be ac-
credited. It has an ongoing
curriculum process that in-
volves administrators,
teachers and parents. It has
promoted innovative pro-
grams such as D.E.A.R. (Drop
Everything And Read), CHAI
(Children and Adults • on
Israel), special education pro-
grams, etc. Over the year, it
has developed a faculty and
staff that are dedicated to pro-
moting excellence in Hebrew
education.
Is it flawless? Of course not.
