preserve the character of the
quarter."
The extensive renovation
work involved replacing
water, telephone and electrici-
ty systems. Facades were re-
painted and sandblasted, iron
grillwork repaired and shut-
ters renewed, revealing the
beautiful features of the
original 19th century struc-
tures. To add a touch of charm
and individuality to the
quarter, shutters and shop
signs were painted blue and
balconies sprayed in a bright
array of colors. "We wanted
Nahlat Shiva to come alive!"
says Mr. Yacobi.
Paved over with Jerusalem
white and pink stone mixed
with black Galilee basalt,
Yoel Salomon Street is now a
thriving pedestrian mall of
cafes and restaurants, pizza
bars and pubs, artisans and
upholsterers. Completed in
time for Nahlat Shiva's 120th
birthday, the new mall was
inaugurated in 1989 to the
sounds of chamber, folk and
klezmer music and in the
presence of 300 descendants
of the quarter's seven original
founders, who came from all
over the world to attend the
celebrations.
As renovation work pro-
ceeds in the adjacent streets,
Mr. Yacobi explains how
Nahlat Shiva is part of a
grand plan that will soon
completely transform the
center of Jerusalem. "By
1995, Yoel Salomon Street
will merge with Ben Yehuda
and form one long pedestrian
mall that will extend as far as
Mahane Yehuda to the west
and Mamilla to the east."
It's a plan the seven would
have been proud of. ID

Holocaust Revisionist
Denies Change Of Mind
London (JTA) — Holocaust
revisionist David Irving,
hotly denying that he has
"recanted" his claim that
the gas chambers never ex-
isted, warned Jews that they
face a new wave of anti-
Semitism within 18 months
because they have duped
people with their "gas
chamber legend."
Mr. Irving also predicted
the destruction of Israel
within 10 years, in an ex-
clusive interview with the
Jewish Chronicle this week.
"The Jews are very foolish
not to abandon the gas
chamber theory right now,
while they have time," Mr.
Irving told the Chronicle
while taking telephone
orders for his book denying
the Holocaust ever occurred.
The extremist, right-wing
author, repeatedly
discredited as a historian,
apparently makes a good liv-
ing from international book
sales and lecture tours.
His name is frequently in
the general media. But Mr.
Irving objected vigorously to
recent news reports that he
might reconsider his claim
that Hitler knew nothing of
gas chambers and never or-
dered the mass destruction
of Jews.
Such reports appeared
after Mr. Irving, with con-
siderable fanfare, last month
produced what he claimed
were the unpublished mem-
oirs of war criminal Adolf
Eichmann, organizer of the
Holocaust, who was hanged
in Israel in 1962.
He said the 1,000-page
manuscript was given to him
by a former member of the
Flemish volunteer division
of the Waffen SS while he
was on a speaking tour in
Argentina last October.
In it, Mr. Eichmann says
he was told by his superior,
Reinhard Heydrich, that the
Fuhrer had indeed ordered
the liquidation of the Jews.
Mr. Irving said he sub-
mitted the manuscript to the
German Federal Archives in
Koblenz for authentication.
Tilmann Koobs, a spokes-
man for the Archives, ac-
knowledged receiving 300 to
600 pages and said it would
check Mr. Irving's text for
authenticity against known
details of Mr. Eichmann's
life.
The Koblenz Archives de-
tected suspicious mistakes
that exposed the alleged
Hitler diaries as a fraud in
1983.
Mr. Irving admits he has
never visited the sites of the
death camps he claims were
not death camps. He de-
scribed himself as a "field
marshal" who will not visit
the "battlefield" until final
victory.
But while Mr. Irving is
"beyond the pale of
historical credibility," he is
"an adept manipulator of
the facts, difficult to ignore
and very dangerous," accor-
ding to a Holocaust expert at
Sheffield University.
