students on the team this
year. Our cumulative grade-
point average is 2.6, which is
better than the average of the
general school population."
Oak Park basketball is cer-
tainly a family affair for the
Goldings. Rita Golding,
Howard's wife for 19 years,
and their two daughters
(Jamie, 15, a freshman at
West Bloomfield High School,
and Andi, 12, a seventh-
grader at Orchard Lake Mid-
dle School), attend many of
the Knights' games. Jamie is
one of the team's statisticians.

game in the Oak Park gym.
Rita, an Oak Park grad, was
the school's cheerleading
sponsor at the time and Gold-
ing was coaching at the mid-
dle school level in the Oak
Park School District.
As any high school coach
will tell you, it takes a special
wife to put up with the in-
fringements on family life
that coaching causes. Golding
also is busy during the sum-
mer coaching the Detroit
Maccabi boys team. Last year,
his squad won the Midwest
championship.
"The hours are screwy,
that's for sure," Golding said.
"I'm lucky I found the right
person. Rita understands that
basketball is a love of mine.
But she also knows that if it
starts causing serious pro-
blems with our family, the
family comes first."
Golding has been a teacher
in the Oak Park School
District since 1967. He's
taught geography and
American history to seventh-
and eighth-graders at Roose-
velt since 1980.
After coaching district mid-
dle school teams from
1967-73, Golding began his
first tour of duty as the Oak
Park boys coach by posting a
14-5 record during the
1975-76 season.
But he lasted less than half
of the 1976-77 campaign,
resigning with a 2-6 mark
because his wife was preg-
nant and he was having pro-
blems with several members
of the team.
With the insistence of
District Athletic Director
Howard Stone and an urge to
get back into coaching, Gold-
ing returned to the sidelines
in 1984-85, guiding
Roosevelt's two boys teams to
a 23-1 record.
He won four games — dou-
ble the team's previous record
— with the Oak Park girls in
