Joe Tarica, executive di- rector for Beth Abraham Hillel Moses, said the con- g-regation's leaders want its members to register with a party,,to be politically aware and active, and to vote as responsible American citizens. In a monthly newsletter, congregants were urged to vote in the primary. "We are urging all Jewish organizations not to get in- volved in partisan or elec- tion activity in favor or op- position of any candidate," said David Gad-Harf, ex- ecutive director for the Jew- ish Community Council. In Michigan, and across the country, Jewish organ- izations — even those with political ties — are polit- ically constrained because of their (federal 501C-3) tax ex- empt status, which prevents them from endorsing or op- posing candidates. Instead, Mr. Gad-Harf said, organizations should educate their voters so they can make informed choices at the polls. The Jewish Community Council, he said, is trying to get more members of the community involved in the political pro- cess. Three Detroit organiza- tions, the Jewish Commun- ity Council, the National Council of Jewish Women and Congregation Beth Achim, hope to educate the community at a Feb. 16 po- litical forum featuring representatives from organized campaign staffs of Republican and Democratic presidential hopefuls. "We believe that Jewish voters, like all voters, need to have as much information as possible about candidate's positions facing the city, state, and nation," Mr. Gad- Harf said. "With that infor- mation, they will be able to make an informed judgment in the upcoming election." Other organizations are also bringing attention to this election. The local NAACP recently hosted a program about David Duke and extremist groups, and the NAACP is organizing a voter registration drive to combat poor voter turnout in Detroit. In addition, New Detroit Inc. has put together a task force on hate politics, to be chaired by Mr. Gad-Harf. The American Arabic and Jewish Friends this week sponsored a program on the election and hate politics. ❑ Its Monthly Balloon Special for Valentine's Day OBUIOU Mylar Balloons $1.A49 each Many varieties to choose from Also Custom made Valentine gifts 855-3636 28946 Orchard Lake Rd. • Farmington Hills if someone you love has been wondering what to buy for winter, suggest a Diamond Tennis Bracelet.
