Israel Signs
Trade Pact

Geneva (JTA) — Israel
signed the first of a series of
free trade accords here last
week with representatives of
the European Foreign Trade
Association, a group of five
small nations that are not
members of the European
Community.
The agreement calls for a
reduction of tariffs, effective
July 1, between Israel and
the EFTA countries. They
are Austria, Switzerland,
Liechtenstein, Norway,
Sweden, Finland and
Iceland.
According to Ya'akov
Cohen, deputy director gen-
eral of trade and industry at
the Foreign Ministry in
Jerusalem, who headed the
Israeli delegation, the
agreement calls for the par-
ties to set up free-trade
areas.
It includes bilateral ar-
rangements for concessions
on agricultural products.
Mr. Cohen, who has been
designated to be Israel's
next ambassador to Spain,
observed that this was the
third agreement Israel has
signed establishing free-
trade zones.
The first, in 1975, was
with the E.C. and the second
with the United States, in
1985.
Mr. Cohen told the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency that
Israel and the EFTA repre-
sentatives will meet again
on Feb. 11 and 12 to com-
plete the text of the agree-
ment.

U.S. Operated
War Airlift

Tel Aviv (JTA) — The
United States operated an
airlift between Israel and
Saudi Arabia on the eve of
the start of the Persian Gulf
War, it is disclosed in a new
book about to be published
here.
A dozen Israeli-made
bridges were flown into the
war theater for the U.S.
Marine Corps, according to
Yosef Evron, author of
Shield and Spear: The Story
of Israel Military Industries.
The portable bridges pro-
vided by Israel were used by
allied troops to cross canals
and tank traps set by the
Iraqi army.
Israel also provided the
U.S. armed forces with
Tomahawk cruise missile
launchers, writes Mr. Evron,
a spokesman for Israel
Military Industries for 22
years.
