GIORGIO ARMANI

Ms. Daher said. "The reality
is that on the ground, it
causes problems."
Andy Acho of Birmingham
strongly objected to the
larger-than-life photo of
Michael George, a party
store owner, who sat casual-
ly dressed in shirt sleeves,
lounging on a chair, chomp-
ing on a cigar. "He looked
exactly like a Mafia don,"
Mr. Acho said. "Not to men-
tion that it took until page
three for the story to men-
tion that only 4 percent of
loans were in question."

Pat Jackson, whose dry
cleaning business is adjacent
to a Chaldean-owned party
store, said tensions on her
street immediately
mounted.
"What do I tell my kids;
what kinds of messages does
this give them? " she asked.
Mr. Stroud said dialogue is
key. "You can't use the
question of racism to sup-
press dialogue," he said.
"The real danger is that
racism and prejudice are
used as a means of suppress-
ing debate." ❑

T

he Hebrew Learning
Center, open to
Midrasha students at
the Agency for Jewish Edu-
cation, is now open to the
general community.
The Center, a one-room
microcosm of Israeli life and
culture, was conceived last
spring by Ofra Fisher, ex-
ecutive director of the Agen-
cy for Jewish Education and
Nira Lev, director of the
Hebrew Language Depart-
ment.
The Center promotes the
study of Hebrew and designs
curriculum and coursework
for students and teachers.
"What we've done was
formalize existing services,"
said Nira Lev, director of the
Hebrew Learning Center
and the Hebrew Language
Department. "We wanted to
add and expand what we
have so the whole commun-
ity can come in and benefit
from our resources."
Mrs. Lev said students and
other teachers called her all
the time outside school with
questions about teaching
Hebrew. "Now everyone will
have a place to go to learn
and study on their own."
The community will have
access to about 150 different
booklets with stories, poems
and articles about Israel,
Jewish history, Hebrew lit-
erature, Israeli newspapers
— all with glossaries and ex-
ercises for teachers' use.
Also available are 75 audio
cassettes for the study of
Hebrew grammar and liter-
ature. There are Hebrew
videos with lesson plans
such as programs from
Israeli TV and movies.
Brand new is a one-of-a-
kind interactive video
system developed by Uni-
versity of Michigan pro-
fessor, Edna Coffin. Her soft-

ware package enables
students to watch Israelis
talk on computer or TV
monitors. In two programs,
students watch, learn about
and discuss an Israeli cour-
troom drama and watch
Israeli students talk about
their lives and studies.
"We are always looking for
new ways to encourage the
study of Hebrew," said Mrs.
Fisher. "The system is ex-
citing and fun. We hope it
will change the way
students learn to speak Heb-
rew." ❑

Canadian Jews
Talk To Yeltsin

Ottawa (JTA) — A Cana-
dian Jewish group used the
occasion of Russian Presi-
dent Boris Yeltsin's visit
here last weekend to express
its "special concern" over
organized anti- Semitism in
his country and to ask for
assurances on other issues of
Jewish interest.
A letter was forwarded to
the Russian ambassador,
Richard Ovinnikov, by B'nai
B'rith Canada's Institute for
International Affairs, for
presentation to Mr. Yeltsin
before he met here with
Canadian Prime Minister
Brian Mulroney.
A copy was sent to Mr.
Mulroney, with the request
that he raise the particular
issues with Mr. Yeltsin, who
stopped in Canada on his
way from the United States,
where he attended a special
U.N. Security Council
summit meeting and then
met with President Bush at
Camp David.
The Canadian Jews' letter
to Mr. Yeltsin underscored
"special concern" for the
"condition of the Jewish
minority.
