I NEWS Storms End Israel Drought Tel Aviv (JTA) — This winter of almost unrelieved foul weather has been unkind to Israelis. But it may have ended a three-year drought, solving the coun- try's dire water problem. Most areas of the country have already received more precipitation than the an- nual average, with nearly two months to go before the rainy season is officially over. Lake Kinneret, the coun- try's largest freshwater res- ervoir, has risen by nearly six feet from the dangerous- ly low level it had fallen to before this winter's downpours. Meteorologists expect the Kinneret, also known as the Sea of Galilee, will be back to normal before the end of the rainy season. At that point, the floodgates leading into the Jordan River will have to be opened to avoid inundating the lake shores, including the resort town of Tiberias. The government-owned Mekorot Water Co. has resumed pumping from the lake into the national water conduits which empty into the coastal wells to replenish depleted groundwater. But Water Commissioner Dan Zaslaysky says he won't be satisfied until Israel has two or three more years of above average rainfall. Jerusalem, meanwhile, is bracing for another blizzard, such as the one that hit the city at the beginning of January. It blocked roads with felled trees and downed power lines.
