This year the project has become an emergency effort to help meet the threat of starvation brought about by economic disarray. Ship- ment of the first of thousands of JDC food packages will begin in the next few days, following months of meticulous plann- ing for storage and distribu- tion to Jewish populated re- gions of the former Soviet empire. Food will be brought to storage centers in Moscow and Petersburg in the Rus- sian Republic, and Odessa and Kiev in Ukraine, from where it will be distributed to other members of the Commonwealth of Indepen- dent States. An experienced 14- member team has been dispatched to those cities to oversee distribution. JDC is studying plans to establish storage facilities in Uzbekistan, in order to pro- vide for even wider geographical distribution. Earlier pilot projects have provided 1,500 food packages to Jews in Moscow and 3,000 to Jews in Petersburg, formerly Len- ingrad. The first shipment, scheduled to go out shortly, consists of 20,000 food packages, each containing 22 pounds of staples —enough to feed a family for weeks. Other packages weighing over five pounds each are be- ing sent by JDC from Israel. Sylvia Hassenfeld, presi- dent of JDC, noted that the organization has always re- sponded to people in distress. "The first priority will be to provide food for those who most depend on our assis- tance to survive," she said. JDC is an overseas arm of the American Jewish com- munity. Over its 77-year his- tory, JDC has been primari- ly funded by the United Jew- ish Appeal which, in turn, raises funds in partnership with local Jewish federa- tions and smaller com- munities throughout the United States. Weapons Sales To India Fruits Of New Ties Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel may become the new sup- plier of military technology and weapons to India, accor- .,. ding to a report in the in- fluential Times of India newspaper, quoted by the Israeli media. New Delhi announced last week that it would upgrade what had been marginal dip- lomatic ties with Israel to the highest level, involving an exchange of ambassadors. One reason for the change may be the breakup of the former Soviet Union and of Yugoslavia, which had been among India's prime weapons suppliers. The supply of weapons from Russia has ceased and an arms deal with strife-torn Yugoslavia had to be cancel- ed, the Times of India re- ported. Israel could be a lifesaver for the Indian military industry, which is hungry for advanced technology and sophisticated weapons, the newspaper said. Sources in the Israeli defense establishment were quoted as saying that Indian requests for Israeli weapons would be looked upon favorably. Israel, in fact, is trying to expand its military exports to raise foreign currency. But it adheres to strict regulations over what to sell and to whom, the sources said. Meanwhile, Israel is try- ing to expand its contacts in Southeast Asia, particularly Vietnam and Cambodia, with the hope of establishing full diplomatic relations and trade with those countries. A diplomat from the Israeli Embassy in Thailand recently visited Vietnam, according to press reports here. A delegation of 12 Israeli industrialists will go to Vietnam shortly as that country embarks on a major development program. There are also reports that Israel will soon send medical aid to Cambodia and that an Israeli diplomat might ac- company the shipment.
