his interest in Jewish
literature, beliefs and
customs. His Diary is the
most accurate document
extant concerning the
history of the Newport
Jewish community from
the building of its syna-
gogue in 1762-63 to its
decline in the early years
of the Revolution. He knew
the Jewish citizens in-
timately; he came frequent-
ly to the synagogue on Sab-
baths and holidays; his
descriptions of sermons,
liturgy and ceremonies are
minutely exact.
In 1767, when he was
nearly forty years of age,
he determined to master
the Hebrew language. In
less than a year he began
to translate the Bible from
the original into English.
He finished his task on Oct.
22, 1770. From January 1,
1771, he set aside a portion
of each day for the study of
the Targums, the commen-
taries of Rashi and David
Moreh
Kimhi, the
Nebuchim of Maimonides,

A New Innovation In WALL UNITS
and ENTERTAINMENT CENTERS

and portions of the
Talmud. On Oct. 26, 1771,
he commenced to read the
Siddur and Machzor
(prayer-books), a quickly
accomplished assignment.
On November 25, 1772, he
began to study the Zohar.
This mystical work
fascinated him, and he
spent much time with it.
He also taught himself
Arabic and Syriac. He
made such good progress
that he was able, on
December 31, 1773, to send
his greatly admired friend,
Rabbi Hayim Isaac Karigal
of the West Indies, a
Hebrew letter twenty-nine
pages in length!

Is there anything in the
entire record and literature
of ecumenism to match this
story in enthusiasm? The
Stiles story may well be
welcomed for historic repeti-
tion as another remarkable
means — especially for our
youth — to study and to
learn about ourselves and
our legacies. ❑

One Deportation
Reversed By Panel

Jerusalem (JTA) — In a
surprise move last week, the
Israel Defense Force cancel-
ed the planned deportation
of one of the 12 Palestinian
activists ordered expelled
from the administered ter-
ritories three weeks ago.
Awad Joude of Ramallah,
one of five West Bank
residents on the list, was
spared by Maj. Gen. Danny
Yatom, IDF commander of
the central sector, which in-
cludes the West Bank.
Maj. Gen. Yatom acted on
the recommendation of the
military review panel hear-
ing the Palestinians' ap-
peals. It was the first time
since 1979 that the Israeli
military authorities have
reversed a deportation order.
An IDF spokesman said
the appeals board decided
deportation was un-
necessary in Mr. Joude's
case because less drastic
measures were available to
local military commanders
to keep him in line.
Moreover, it was pointed
out that Mr. Joude had no
record of prior arrests, ex-
cept a brief period of ad-
ministrative detention last
year.
The four other West Bank
Palestinians and seven in
the Gaza Strip whose ouster
from the territories was or-

dered by Defense Minister
Moshe Arens on Jan. 2, may
carry their appeals to
Israel's High Court of
Justice.
The order to deport them,
for which Israel was
unanimously condemned by
the U.N. Security Council on
Jan. 6, followed the murders
of four Jewish settlers in the
administered territories by
Arab gunmen.
The 12 activists selected
for deportation were not
directly linked to the
murders but accused of
creating a climate conducive
to such violence.
But many observers in and
out of Israel believe the
resort to expulsion was less a
security measure than a po-
litical move intended to ap-
pease Jewish settlers in-
furiated by the killings.
The display of leniency
toward at least one potential
deportee was overshadowed
by the dragnet arrests over-
night of more than 60 Arabs
in the West Bank and east
Jerusalem who were
suspected of subversive ac-
tivities.
Protesting Palestinian
leaders threatened not to at-
tend the multinational
phase of the Middle East
peace conference opening in
Moscow.
