Mayers Urge
In Nathan's Pardon

-- Three
Tel Aviv
prominent Israeli n*,-.17nrs
urged President Chaim
zog to grant a pardon to Abie
Nathan.
The 64-year-old peace ac-
tivist has served over four
months of an 18-month
prison sentence for meeting
in Tunis last year with
Palestine Liberation Organ-
ization leader Yassir Arafat,
in violation of Israeli law.
Mayors Teddy Kollek of
Jerusalem, Shlomo Lahat of
Tel Aviv and Eli Landau of
Herzliya called on Mr. Her-
zog with a letter from
Nathan asking to be releas-
ed.
They conceded that he
broke the law forbidding
contact with the PLO, but
they argued that he was
motivated only by a desire to
advance peace and did no
harm to national security.
Although repentance is
the usual justification of a
presidential pardon, Mr.
Nathan's letter to Mr. Her-
zog reportedly expressed no
regrets for his actions.
But his lawyer, Pinhas
Marinski, said Mr. Nathan
was aware of the changed
circumstances. With peace
talks now in progress with
the Arabs, he would now
work within the law, the at-
torney said.

Arms To Iraq
Are Investigated

Bonn (JTA) Germany's
Foreign Ministry disclosed
that criminal investigations
have been opened in re-
sponse to allegations that
German companies supplied
Iraq with equipment to pro-
duce enriched uranium, a
component of nuclear
weapons.
The ministry did not name
the companies under
scrutiny, but sources outside
the ministry said they in-
cluded some "giants" with
excellent connections in
Bonn. •
The material for the
criminal probe came partly
from the United Nations,
said government sources,
adding that the government
would cooperate fully with
the United Nations in fur-
ther efforts to gather infor-
mation about Iraq's nuclear
capability.
The German industrialists
association declined to com-
ment on allegations against
any of its members, except to
note that no company has
yet been convicted of illegal-
ly exporting to Iraq.
