fudge and trimmed with

Helen and Lynda will be pro-
ducing the cake in a single-
layer wedge called, "A Slice Is
Nice."
BIG QUESTION among
many folks is why Mery
Pregulman still isn't in the
Michigan Sports Hall of Fame
. . . It was somewhat expected
when Nick Kerbaway was liv-
ing and running the show .. .
they didn't get along . . . but
for some strange reason,
Mery is still on the outside
looking in.
All he did while playing
guard center and tackle for
the University of Michigan
Wolverines was be chosen
three times to the All-Big 10
team (1941, 1942 and 1943),
earn All-American honors as
a tackle in 1943, be selected
in 1969 a member of
Michigan's all-time football
team by public poll, be elected
to the College National Foot-
ball Foundation and Hall of
Fame in 1952, be elected to
the Michigan Jewish Sports
Hall of Fame in 1984, star
four years with the Detroit
Lions and Green Bay Packers,
etc.
Beating the drums for Mery
are people like Marvin
Lieberman in East Lansing,
who have good cause to see
him in the Michigan Sports
Hall of Fame because of a
deserving record . . . You
can write to Marvin at 726
Applegate Lane, East Lans-
ing, MI 48823, or phone him
at 517-351-0887 or
517-351-6587.
A petition wouldn't hurt .. .
Looking over many of the
seemingly nondescript names
in the Michigan Sports Hall
of Fame, it sure doesn't seem
right that Mery is not in.
LOOKING BACK on col-
umns of yesteryears .. .
Jan. 4, 1946 . . . "The pic-
ture of Rabbi Morris Adler in
Tokyo, used for our publica-
tion, was taken by Nate
Kusnit with a captured Ger-
man camera brought there by
one of the other boys."
Jan. 11, 1946 . . . "The gal
who served him sandwiches
in the California USO .. .
before he went overseas . . . is
now Harry Weinstein's wife
. . . Saw her standing behind
the counter and continued
seeing her through the bat-
tles of Okinawa, Saipan,
Guam, the Phillipines and
Japan . . . He was an aviation
mechanic on a seaplane
tender, and early in the war
sent us the control stick han-
dle from the plane on which
Capt. Joe Foss shot down 16
Jap Zeros.
"Harry won't forget very
easily the time droves of
Kamakazis filled the air like
so many flies . . . but not one
hit the ship . . . Every boy had
a prayer on his lips and they
all later believed that it had
been their turn to have them
answered . . . A humorous
aspect appeared when the
fellows picked up a stray lamb
on one of the islands . . . The
cook fed it for three days, and
then it died . . . He was put on
the ship's blacklist . . . and
some of the boys were afraid
to eat any more of his cook-
ing!"
JAN. 23, 1946 . . . "To
satisfy the males and fems
who took it so to heart, Her-
man Gorman, just back from
overseas, reports that the
magazine article, 'Yanks Are
Lousy Lovers,' was carried by
many of the boys . . . for the
gals there to become mad at
. . . One trick heard the item
and yelled out, `Dey lie! Dey
lie! No one is lover like
Yankee boy!"
March 29, 1946 . . .
"Spring is here and Dexter
had its first preview of things
to come . . . "Buggy Blvd." is
cluttered with the prams, and
the first accident of the year
took palce on the corner of
Webb . . . A head-on collision
which shook loose the violent
vocal cords of baby . . . splat-
tered the sidewalk with
charlotte russes and sent
potatoes rolling crazily into
the street."
April 12, 1946 . . .
"Remember when, at the last
minute, Al Silber, the sports-
wear man, backed out of
opening a store and later was
so glad he passed out ties in
the community? . . . The site
was one of three completely
demolished by fire the next
night .. .
"Who will ever forget the
classic card sent by Sanford
Blau while a Jap prisoner?
. . . It read, 'I'm fine. Eating
good and being treated swell.
Give my regards to Sweeney.'
"The referee's horn still
kept by Sam Wander is his
memory of a time ago in
England . . . He was the
sergeant helping to organize
a football league for the boys
stationed there and managed
to get all necessary equip-
ment except a horn . . . Sam
finally received it from the
States . . . stamped, 'Made In
England.' "
May 24, 1946 . . . "Little
Bobby Coleman is about 5
years old . . . His eyes snapped
wide open when he spied a
Pekinese . . . Feeling that it
was some sort of dog, he turn-
ed to his mother for confirma-
tion of his suspicions . . .
Assured that it was a dog,
Bobby frowned disgustedly
and snorted, 'Well, some dogs
really look like dogs.' " ❑
