A dentist since 1951, Chet retired in 1988 and, as one of the area's leading proponents of Dixieland jazz, will begin his 15th year this October playing every Tuesday even- ing at Lido On The Lake own- ed by Joe Vicari (also An- diamo) and Jim LeFebre, in St. Clair Shores. His Wolverine Jazz Band is more than just a Dixieland aggregation . . . big also on conventional jazz that's easy to listen to and dance to plus playing many standards and jazz classics. The musical history retain- ed by Chet is capsuled into lit- tle tidbits which he very in- terestingly and matter-of- factly offers the audience bet- ween numbers. With Chet since the Wolverine Jazz Band started at Lido On The Lake is a classic in herself . . . popular songstress Dixiebelle, whose effervescent personality is au- dience captivating as she walks around the room with her remote mike, telling folks of her next song dedicated to the Detroit Symphony, "I'm Not Going To Play No Second Fiddle, I'm Used To Playing Lead" popularized by Bessie Smith, or "Rose Of Washing- ton Square" and "Sam, You Made The Pants Too Long." Dixiebelle has had quite a career in her own right, play- ing most of the country clubs in town and conventions around the country with her accordion and vocals . . . Dixiebelle's strolling group, "The Redheads," she and two other gals, was a hit wherever it played . . . as was another of her groups called "The Strolling Strings". . . Dixie- belle on accordion and vocals with three violins and the on- ly male being its bass player. She sang with Chet's band back in 1973 and 1976 when it was noted mostly as a dance group . . . and went with him to Club Lido in 1977 . . . As a member of Chet's ag- gregation, Dixiebelle has been at oodles of jazz festivals around the country and in 1982 was with Chet for the pre-game Super Bowl here in the Pontiac Silverdome .. . and '83 and '84 did pre-game shows for the Detroit Lions. The versatility of Chet's present group is exemplified with numbers played for the dancers who come out to hear him on Tuesday nights .. . "Poor Butterfly," "Satin Doll," "Jersey Bounce," "Un- forgettable" and more . . . Chet on Bunny Berrigan's "I Can't Get Started With You" is another example of high talent as he points his coronet out and plays the beautiful magic of this wonderful melody. Give the boys in the band their due credit . . . Fritz Moore, clarinet/sax; Ron Kischuik, trombone; Dan Maslanka, drums; Rich Kowalewsky, bass; and Chuck Shermatero, piano . . . Play- ing the arrangements of Chet, who likes to revitalize almost forgotten tunes, no easy chore because of his seemingly intricate demand for unified diversification .. . many on tunes written before some of his group were born. When Chet's first album came out in 1978, it was to cater to all earfuls . . . and since he was a practicing den- tist, what better than to lead off with "My Sweet Tooth Says I Wanna But My Wisdom 'Thoth Says No" by Fletcher Henderson . . . It also included "Blues For Bix" which Chet composed follow- ing a "Bix Biederbecke Festival" in Davenport, Iowa . . . Dixiebelle's "All That Jazz" is an example of her ability to embrace a variety of moods . . . And Chet's ar- rangement of "Body And Soul" is choice . . . Other numbers included "Dixieland One Step," "Rhythm King," "Jazz Band Ball," "Rose of Washington Square," "Put It Right Here," "The Chant" and "Cake Walking Babies." Album number two in 1982 was called "Painless Jazz" .. . and in 1987 came a highly favored cassette by "Wolverine Jazz Band featur- ing Dixiebelle" . . . with "Miss Mud," "Waiting 18 Years," "Gimme Some Of That," "Happy Feet," "Lime- house Blues," "Everybody Loves My Baby," "After You've Gone," "Poor Butter- fly," "2nd Fiddle' and "Roll On Mississippi." The capability of today's Wolverine Jazz Band to inter- mingle jazz music in time with solo improvisations (Dixieland) alongside good solid jazz as it should be played rather than wanting unison makes for good listen- ing fun . . . And when you get down to it, this is really what this kind of music is all about. By the way, that first album put out by the Wolverine Jazz Band, led by Dr. Chet Bogan, then a practicing dentist, was on the Bicuspid Label. NOW THAT pizza is being sold at Pearl City . . . does it mean that pizza places will be going into Chinese food? HE HAS BEEN listed in Best Lawyers In America for the past 12 years . . . and named one of the "10 Most In- fluential Lawyers In Michigan" by Lawyers Weekly. Now Henry Baskin, whose biography as an attorney is quite a distinguished one, has K K K Chet Bogan has mixed jazz and dentistry since the '40s. been reappointed to co-chair the Judicial Qualification Committee and the Annual Meeting committee of the State Bar of Michigan . . . Not bad for my former paperboy, guest columnist and all- around good guy, who also comes across with high marks as a TV and radio host, plus being a nationally syndicated columnist, lecturer and author. Another notch in the pride belt of Hank's parents, Max and Gladys Baskin, in Florida. Get well wishes . . . to Max. IF SOME OF the gals at The Jewish News are criterions . . . and when it comes to chocolate, believe me, they are . . . then the "Sweet Temptation" cake by Helen Grushko and Lynda Krasnik is another winner . . . Ed and John Jonna of Merchant of Vino picked theirs as the victor among 50 entries on a recent Kelly & Co. WXYZ-TV show. But take it from experts .. . Leslie Kantor ("Mmm-won- derful. Chocolate heaven!") . . . Bonnie Thgal ("Oh, so good!") . . . Patty Zorlen ("Gosh! It's heavenly!") .. . Dharlene Norris ("Totally scrumptious!') . . . and Betsy Leemon ("Sheer ecstasy!") .. . that sampling the two-layer chocolate cake of amaretto chocolate mousse filling, top- ped with a swirl of chocolate N N
