JET JEWISH ENSEMBLE THEATRE presents "They originally named the character Elsworth Birdie," explains Mr. Kudisch. "The original writers didn't want to make it that closely associated with Elvis, so they took some ideas from Conway Twitty, whose hairstyle and costuming were more ex- travagant at the time. Of course, Elvis caught up pret- ty quickly." A resident of New York Ci- ty since 1989, Mr. Kudisch was lucky to find acting work there just four months after he arrived. Prior to the Birdie tour, which began eight months ago, he appeared in the participatory play, Tamara, in which theater- goers followed actors from room to room in the Park Avenue Armory, which was dressed up to look like a man- sion in fascist Italy; and he understudied roles in off- Broadway's Quiet on the Set, a play about a TV soap opera featuring stars from daytime television. Mr. Kudisch also appeared on the ABC soap, "Loving," "He's the best Conrad ever. He's really got it." Tommy Tune playing hitman Ralph Barnes, who stalked one of the leading characters. "There was a Mafia plot go- ing on in the show, and I was the start of it," says Mr. Kudisch. "Of course, she was was a contract player. Con- tracted players don't die, so I got the plot all nice and thickened and they said thank you — stab." Mr. Kudisch hopes more TV and film work will be in his future, but is committed to stage work, his first love. "I've always liked to get up in front of people," he says. "I've always been a bit of a ham." His first major public per- formance was in a high school production of My Fair Lady, singing "The Street Where You Live." "I was terrible," he says. "What's worse, my high school teacher still shows that tape to people." Well, if not a star in high school, Ibmmy Tune has faith in Kudisch's work today. "He's the best Conrad ever," says Mr. Tune. "I saw the movie version, and Mark's really better. He's a very good actor, he's musical. I think he's a star — it's just a mat- ter of time. He's really got it, and the girls just love him . . ." Coming from Broadway's top director-choreographer, that's a rave to savor. 0 THE AMERICAN PREMIERE OF Flight „or WE HAVE EVERYTHING YOU NEED FOR SUPER BOWL SUNDAY, JAN. 26 • TRAYS • SANDWICHES • SIDE DISHES • MEAT & DAIRY SELECTIONS mum r- - $5 OFF!
