"Linda is an outstanding
championship-meet swim-
mer," the coach added. "Many
of her top performances come
in big meets. That's an innate
quality. Some kids do just the
opposite when the pressure is
on."
"I love big meets," Gold-
stein agreed. "The crowd and
the excitement get me going.
I tell myself that I worked so
hard to get this far, so I
shouldn't blow it."
Goldstein says she knows
where her athletic prowess
and competitiveness come
from. She inherited those
traits from her father, a 1982
inductee into the University
of Detroit Athletic Hall of
Fame.
Mr. Goldstein, who died
June 30, 1988, was a starter
at guard for the Titan basket-
ball team from 1954-56.
He scored 1,001 points dur-
ing his career, ranking him
21st on the school's career
list, and was an All-Missouri
Valley honorable mention
choice in 1955. He was the
captain of the 1956 team.
Linda, who has two sisters
(Barb, 25, and Suzie, 23), said
her father got her interested
in sports. After his death, he
became her constant
inspiration.
"Every time I get down, my
mom says I should work
harder for my dad and I do,
because I want to go on for
him," Linda said. "He used to
drive me to all my meets and
be there for me."
Mr. Goldstein would be very
proud of his daughter's swim-
ming record. As a freshman,
she won the 500 freestyle and
finished second in the 200
freestyle in the Class A meet.
She was second in the 500
and third in the 200 the next
season.
While at Mercy, she was
third in the 200 IM and the
100 fly. In the November meet
at Eastern Michigan, she was
fourth in the 200 IM in
2:08.91 and fifth in the 500
with 5:12.17. Earlier, she cap-
tured the Oakland County
meet title in the IM.
She earned All-American
honors as a sophomore and
junior and she was a perfect
6-for-6 in individual events in
three Metro Suburban Ac-
tivities Association (MSAA)
meets.
West Bloomfield's record
board has Goldstein's name
all over it. In fact, she may
very well be the best woman
swimmer in school history if
versatility is the main
criteria. In the school records,
she's ranked in the team's top
10 in every event.
Goldstein helped the
Lakers go 9-3 in dual meets
this season and finish in a tie
for third with Bloomfield
Hills Lahser in the MSAA
standings. Seven West Blom-
field swimmers qualified for
the state meet, the highest
total in many years.
It hasn't only been in high
school athletics where Gold-
stein has made her mark.
She's been competing for the
Michigan Stingrays in age-
group swimming since she
was 8 and has won many
honors, including several
state championships.
"I've got boxes and boxes of
trophies and medals from
swimming," she said.
Goldstein hasn't competed
with the Stingrays for the
past two summers, but she's
working out with them in
preparation for the Senior
All-American meet in
Chicago in June.
Competitive swimming
may not be in Goldstein's
future. While she plans to at-
tend college in California, she
isn't sure if she wants to
undertake the enormous corn-
mitment needed to compete
at that level and do well in
the classroom.
Even if she doesn't continue
swimming, Goldstein can
look back on her career with
a great sense of satisfaction.
That's because she arrived
back home just in time. 171
Ethiopian Olim
As Medalists?
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Immi-
grants from Ethiopia, excell-
ing as runners and tolerant
of pain, could bring Israel
closer to Olympic medals.
A select group of Ethiopian
men between the ages of 22
and 29, all of whom have
completed army service, are
undergoing intensive com-
petitive training under a
program being conducted by
the North American Con-
ference on Ethiopian Jewry,
with the cooperation of the
Defense Ministry, various
sports clubs and other offi-
cial bodies.
There are high hopes for
the Ethiopian Jews, who are
believed to possess the same
tolerance for pain as athletes
from East Africa, who have
long dominated long-
distance running in interna-
tional meets.
The program, which
operates from the Ramat
Efal Kibbutz Seminar, on
the outskirts of Tel Aviv,
also offers academic studies
for the young immigrants,
most of whom have been in
Israel for about 10 years.
They are also being prepared
for high school matricula-
tions and university entry-
level standards.
