e's the Jewish chap-
lain for the U.S. Naval
Academy, but Rabbi
Albert Slomovitz sometimes
feels more like a tour guide
than a chaplain.
"I can't even count how
many tourists have come
through lately," says the
chaplain, whose office in
Mitscher Hall is just steps
away from the Academy's uni-
que Jewish chapel.
Naturally, Jewish visitors
to the Academy are eager to
see the place where Jewish
midshipmen hold their Shab-
bat services, and the chaplain
is often on hand to greet them
and show them the modern
150-seat chapel.
Among the groups who
recently toured the chapel
were visiting Israeli war
veterans, a group of Russian
Jews, and young people from
the B'nai B'rith Youth
Organization.
Besides these specifically
Jewish groups, Rabbi
Slomovitz has also led
general tour groups through
the chapel. While touring the
Academy, many groups now
make a point to visit the
Jewish chapel.
"The local tour guides are
starting to include a walk
through our chapel as an
ongoing part of a tour of An-
napolis," explains Rabbi
Slomovitz. "People are star-
ting to discover the Jewish
chapel and the Jewish life
here."
Indeed, for Jewish travelers,
a visit to the Naval Academy
offers a fascinating look at
the way Jewish life is an in-
tegral part of this prestigious
institution. Even though
Jewish midshipmen are only
60 in a total student body of
4,200, they enjoy a full range
of Jewish activities here. The
modern chapel, where they
hold regular Shabbat services
and worship on Jewish
holidays, was dedicated in
August 1981. As visitors
enter, they notice first the
striking, large Torah from
Czeckoslovakia which was
rescued from the Nazis and is
on display in a special lucite
case.
They often admire, too, the
multi-colored tapestry which
covers the Torah table on the
