Deputy Board
Wary Of Group
London (JTA) — The Board
of Deputies of British Jews is
keeping a wary distance
from the controversial
Muslim Parliament, an new-
ly launched London organ-
ization that says it is model-
ed on Anglo-Jewry's repre-
sentative body.
"We would not decide as a
matter of policy not to talk to
any group," said Neville
Nagler, chief executive of
the Board.
It is troubled, however,
that the Muslim Parliament,
which claims to represent
Britain's nearly 2 million
Moslems, has called for civil
disobedience.
The Parliament's leader,
Dr. Salim Siddiqui, has in-
structed the 155 hand-picked
members to withhold taxes if
they are not allowed the vol-
untary state-aided status for
Islamic schools that
Anglican, Roman Catholic
and Jewish schools have
won.
"The Board would be
prepared to speak to any
group with which we share
common interests, such as
shechita and racial
violence," Mr. Nagler said.
But while the Muslim
Parliament members are not
"law- breakers per se," they
have threatened civil
disobedience on specific
issues, none of which are of
interest to Jews, he added.
Aubrey Rose, a Board of
Deputies vice president,
condemned the Muslim
Parliament's position.
"Not obeying the law is
contrary to what this coun-
try and what Jews in this
country stand for. Anyone
who enjoys the protection of
this country should show
allegiance to it," he said.
According to Mr. Rose, he
has been in contact with
Moslem leaders who were
"embarrassed and con-
cerned" about the Muslim
Parliament.
Mr. Siddiqui claimed he
had consulted with the
Board of Deputies over its
constitution.
Meanwhile, a delegation of
21 British Moslems, led by
Sher Azam of the Bradford
Council of Mosques, return-
ed from a visit to Israel re-
cently with complaints that
the Al Aksa mosque on the
Temple Mount in Jerusalem,
the third holiest mosque of
the Islamic faith, was under
attack by Israelis.
Dan Ashbel of the Israel
Embassy here dismissed the
accusations as "nonsense
based on ignorance and try-
ing to stir up hatred."
