Can Arab-American and
Jewish groups work together
to build a constituency for
Middle East peace? Probably
not, says Theodore Mann,
the longtime Jewish activist
who co-founded Project
Nishma, a group that com-
bines a dovish position on
Middle East peace with a
strong concern for Israel's
security needs.
Mr. Mann brought that
message to last week's an-
nual meeting of the Arab-
American Institute.
"The point I was trying to
make is that working
together on a wide range of
domestic issues would be
very much in order," Mr.
Mann said in an interview.
"We have some important
common goals."
But the Middle East peace
process is different, he said.
While Jews and Arabs can
both work for peace, he
asserted, it is probably not a
good idea for them to work

"Dialoguing on the subject
of peace makes sense," he
said, "but a joint peace con-
stituency is a bad idea be-
cause to the extent that they
are as interested as we are in
achieving a secure peace,
each of us would lose
credibility with our respec-
tive friends in the Middle
East."
Instead, he told the Arab-
American gathering, Jews
and Arabs should continue
to work with their respective
friends in the region as the
peace process unfolds.
The prosperity of our people
is not dependent upon civil
emancipation, but upon the
love of a man for his
neighbor.
