non-violent protest and
standing up for one's per-
sonal and civil rights have
really affected all of us."
Mr. Gad-Harf pointed to
the 1987 march on Washing-
ton for Soviet Jewry as a
lesson in non-violent action
the Jewish community
learned from Dr. King.
What concerns Mr. Gad-
Hart though, is a continued
growth in separatism bet-
ween races and ethnic
groups that he's seen since
Dr. King's death. He said
part of that separatism is
positive because of a growth
in self-pride and self-
reliance. It has, however,
also led to extremism in
some communities who
publicly discourage col-
laboration with other
groups.
"It seems like there's
much less unity in the black
community today," said Mr.
Gad-Harf. "When Martin
Luther King was alive, he
was looked on by most
blacks as their leader.
There's no one today that
comes close to matching his
level of grass-roots leader-
ship."
When Dr. King was alive,
the issues the faced were
"His messages of
non-violent protest
and standing up for
one's personal and
civil rights have
really affected us
all."
David Gad-Harf
about civil equality, Mr.
Gad-Haff said. These issues
included rights to vote, to at-
tend public schools and even
to eat in a restaurant of
choice. Today, the issues fall
into more of a gray area.
"There's broad recognition
within the black community
that the challenges they are
facing have to be dealt with
by their own community,"
Mr. Gad-Harf said. "While
they'd appreciate partner-
ships, they have to take care
of their own future."
Rabbi Nelson can re-
member a day from his
pulpit in Rio De Janeiro,
Brazil, when he wasn't sure
what, after Dr. King, the
future would bring in terms
of race relations. The day Dr.
King was buried, Rabbi
Nelson officiated at the wed-
ding of two Peace Corps
workers. The next day, on
the front page of the area's
daily newspaper was a photo
of Dr. King's funeral. Under
