Department Of Justice Is Seeking Survivors New York — The Depart- ment of Justice has requested the assistance of the _World Jewish Congress in locating survivors of surgical steriliza- tion procedures done by the Nazis during the Second World War. The Office is investigating several individuals who are suspected of having perform- ed or been involved in the per- formance of surgical steriliza- tion of Jews, or gentiles mar- ried to Jews, in the cities of Daugavpils, Ilukste, and Valmiera, Latvia, during the Nazi occupation between 1941 and 1944. The WJC is urgently look- ing for survivors who have knowledge of the sterilization program or procedures in these cities. Since, due to the personal and sensitive nature of this topic, survivors may wish their information to re- main confidential, survivors can be assured that no infor- mation will be released without their consent. More than 800 people came to hear the concert, as well as an appeal by Cam- paign co-chair Lawrence Jackier. Mr. Jackier an- nounced that $19.15 million had been raised so far — $600,000 more than last year from the same con- tributors. Led by Anatoli Cheiniouk, Ars Poetica performed works by Ernst Bloch, Antonio Vivaldi, Wolfgang Mozart and Gioacchino Rossini. Cellist Yuli Turovsky per- formed solo pieces by Bloch. The concert was performed as a form of gratitude to the Detroit Jewish community for resettling hundreds of Soviet Jews, including Mr. Cheiniouk. Some of the or- chestra members are also emigres. ❑ Australia Sets Council Of Christians, Jews Sydney, Australia (JTA) — Australia's first National Council of Christians and Jews will start operations shortly to combat anti- Semitism in Australian churches and address other matters of common concern. Branches in New South Wales and Victoria states have formally endorsed a constitution. Approaches have been made to incor- porate existing councils in Western Australia, South Australia and the Australian Capital Ter- ritory.
