This exhibition of black and white photographs and ac- companying documentation displays the loss to German culture with the forced emigration of many of Ger- many's leading Jewish in- tellectuals before and during World War II. The artist, Herlinde Koelbl, who makes her home and studio in Munich, Germany, traveled around the world to photograph and interview over 80 Jewish people who are prominent in the cultural arts. Large formal portraits and portions of the conducted interviews make up the exhibition. (1 Mile N. of Avon) Rochester Two educational events have been planned to accom- pany the exhibition. The Museum/Gallery will sponsor "Grand Influence" noon-4 p.m. Feb. 2. Children of all ages are invited to bring a grandparent or special older person to the Museum/Gal- lery for a photographic shoot and interview session. Monte Nagler, a local photographer, and Marcia Boxman and Elaine Yaker of the Pierce Street Gallery, will photograph the child's "Grand Influence" and the children will conduct inter- views about their guest's Jewish heritage. The photographs and inter- views will be fashioned into an exhibition Feb. 9, displayed in the Maple-Drake JCC lobby, with an opening reception to honor the young artists and their families. There is a charge; pre- registration is required. The Museum/Gallery and the Goethe Institut also will conduct a symposium ad- dressing the history of Jews in Germany before and after World War II Feb. 8-9. Speakers will include the artist, Herlinde Koelbl; Pro- fessor Richard Kaplan, a film historian and director of The contemporary Exiles; German-Jewish novelist Rafael Seligman; Dr. George Mosse, a historian from University of Wisconsin- Madison; and Y. Michal Bodemann, a sociologist from Toronto, Canada. Other par- ticipants will include pro- fessors Dr. Guy Stern and Sid Bolkosky, with Rabbi Sher- win Wine as the opening night M.C. The symposium will consist of several lec- tures, a viewing of The Exiles, and a panel discussion assess- ing the status of Jews in Ger- many today. Bar-Ilan Program Is On Absorption Tamar Elsa, an Ethiopian Exodus student who arrived in Israel as part of Operation Moses and now a student at Bar-Ilan University, and Rab- bi Pinchas Hayman, Bar- Ilan's dean of students, will speak 7:30 p.m. Jan. 22 at the Maple-Drake Jewish Com- munity Center. The topic will be "From Wilderness to Mainstream: the Challenges and Rewards of Israel's Ethiopian Absorp- tion." There will be no charge or solicitation. Tamar Elsa was born in Ethiopia in 1968. After losing both her parents she made aliyah in November 1984. She settled in Beersheva. In 1990 she was accepted to the chemistry department at Bar- Ilan University and is now in- volved in a dual program of Elsa K N Hayman chemistry and Bar-Ilan's Women's Torah Seminary. Rabbi Hayman was ordain- ed by Yeshiva University in 1978 and received his doc- torate from that institution. He made aliyah in 1987 and joined the Bar-Ilan faculty.
