Robert Maxwell:
Victim Of Foul Play

Paris (JTA) - A second
autopsy of Robert Maxwell,
performed secretly in Israel,
showed signs of blows to the
body, indicating he may
have been the victim of foul
play, according to a French
news magazine.
The autopsy was perform-
ed by a team of Israeli and
British forensic surgeons
before the media tycoon was
buried in Jerusalem in
November and showed
strong evidence Mr. Max-
well's death was not ac-
cidental, the weekly Paris
Match reported.
The magazine published
photographs taken from a
videotape of the second au-
topsy, reportedly performed
at the Abu Kabir Forensic
Institute in Tel Aviv. The
institute had no comment on
the report.
The photographs showed
bruised and battered
features, suggesting he may
have been beaten before he
mysteriously disappeared
from his yacht near the
Canary Islands on Nov. 5.
Paris Match published
comments from what it said
was the pathologists' con-
versation, during which one
of the coroners said, "You
don't end up like that by fall-
ing overboard."
The photographs were also
shown to French
pathologists, who concurred.
Mr. Maxwell's body was
recovered from the sea the
day following his disap-
pearance. An autopsy per-
formed by Spanish au-
thorities concluded he may
have suffered a heart attack
before or after he fell or
jumped from his yacht.
According to the Spanish

autopsy report, drowning
was not the cause of death.
The Israeli-British team
concluded that the 68-year-
old Mr. Maxwell suffered a
brain hemorrhage before he
hit the water and judging
from a broken nose and
other severe abrasions, could
have been the victim of a se-
vere beating.
Mr. Maxwell, a
Czechoslovak-born Jew and
wartime resistance fighter,
lost both his parents in the
Holocaust. He obtained
British citizenship after the
war, during which he fought
with distinction in the
British army.
Mr. Maxwell amassed a
fortune in publishing and
acquired other businesses in
Europe and North America.
At the time of his death,
his holdings included
Israel's second-largest daily,
Ma'ariv. But his multibillion
dollar empire began to col-
lapse under a burden of debt
and is now in bankruptcy.

Zionism Series
Seen In Russia

Tel Aviv (JTA) - Sections
of Israel Television's 19-part
"Pillar of Fire" series on the
history of Zionism will be
screened on Russian televi-
sion this month, Israel
Broadcasting Authority di-
rector general Arye Mekel
disclosed.
The $1 million series, pro-
duced by Israel Television's
Yigael Lossin in 1980, and
followed by a companion
book, will need no special
preparation before it is
screened by the newly incor-
porated Russian Television
Service.
