WE'RE FIGHTING FOR YOUR LIFE

American Heart Association

stirred controversy among
his colleagues for suggesting
that Jews who are intermar-
ried may be counted in a mi-
nyan.
In the past, intermarriage
was viewed as an act of re-
bellion or rejection of
Judaism, so Jews who
intermarried were essential-
ly excommunicated. But now
that intermarriage is most
often a natural outcome of
living an assimilated life,
Rabbi Cohen suggests that
"the totally punitive at-
titude which the Orthodox
rabbinate has hitherto
adopted, may not be ap-
propriate. We simply cannot
ignore the phenomenon nor
cast aside a goodly propor-
tion of our people."
The article was a product
of the RCA Roundtable, the
group's alachic think tank,
and is a limited but impor-
tant attempt to amplify the
discussion.
While Orthodoxy debates
counting intermarried Jews
in a minyan, Conservative
synagogues are dealing with
whether or not to allow the
children of non-Jewish
mothers into their religious
schools or intermarried Jews
to be congregational officers.
"A synagogue's public
policy toward intermarried
Jews is a very serious issue,"
one national Jewish leader
explained. "You don't want
to hurt people, but then
again, there have to be some
consequences for their ac-
tions."
On the personal level,
Rabbi Joel Zaiman (Conser-
vative), former president of
the Synagogue Council of
America, says he doesn't
automatically seek the con-
version of the non-Jewish
partner in an intermarriage.
He notes that Jewish law
provides the framework for
conversion, but doesn't
mandate it.
Rabbi Zaiman hears a
great deal about outreach,
but is skeptical. "If outreach
is successful, what does that
mean? How will that change
the people we are welcoming
in?" he wonders. And who's
going to change who more —
the Jews or the non-Jews —
in the process?
The questions and
dilemmas will remain for a
long time.
Each response should repre-
sent a step toward making
increased knowledge of
Judaism more accessible, for
both Jews and non-Jews.
Equally important, our
efforts should not only be
geared toward losing fewer
Jews but toward bridging
the gap that separates us, as
Jews, already.

CHOLESTERHOLICS EAT
LIKE THERE'S NO TOMORROW

Cholesterholics love rich, fatty foods. They can't seem to get
through a day without lots of meat dripping in gravy. Cream
always goes into their coffee. One sweet dessert leads to
another. But the fact is, these foods can increase the level of
cholesterol in the blood which can lead to heart disease.

But there's a way to help yourself. By cutting down on the fatty
foods in your diet, you could reduce your blood cholesterol
level and perhaps reduce your chance of heart disease.

So if you think you might be a cholesterholic, contact your
American Heart Association for a diet good for life.
