uuu WHY YOUR PARTY PLANS SHOULD INCLUDE US. SOUTHFIELD A FAMILY AFFAIR tant," Mr. Krieger adds. "There's no way that a stu- dent coming out of a school situation is ready to jump in- to the professional opera world. These kinds of middle- ground programs are very im- portant steps in their careers." Mr. Krieger got a late start on his own musical career when he was handed a clarinet in high school. Short- ly thereafter, he decided to become a musician and he began studying piano and conducting. He received a bachelor's degree from the Manhattan School of Music and a master's degree from the California Institute of the Arts where he studied con- ducting. "I kind of fell into opera. I played in pit or- chestras and did backstage conducting. I always loved singers once I got into classical music. I hung out with them, I played for them, I coached them and I married one of them." Mr. Krieger's wife, Sarah Bachmann Krieger, teaches voice privately in Ann Arbor and performs in recitals. The couple have two children — a 9-year-old daughter and an infant son. He says that he does not plan to push his children into a vocal music career. "I would hope that they would make up their own minds about it." As for Mr. Krieger, he says that only his voice prevented him from embarking on a singing career. "If I had a voice there's no way that I would do anything as stupid as wave at other people while they sang. Most conductors are frustrated singers, ab- solutely." ❑ a variety of homes in every style and price range ❑ central location with easy access to all major freeways ❑ rich community life ❑ warm, friendly neighborhoods ❑ award-winning City services and recreational facilities ❑ a school system nationally- recognized for excellence BUSINESS MEETINGS SPORTS BANQUETS REHEARSAL DINNERS For more information: City of Southfield Housing and Neighborhood Center, 354-4400 HOLIDAY BANQUETS SPECIAL OCCASIONS.
