was not what my life should
be about.
"Because I was very in-
terested in leaving academia,
I told various contacts that I
might be interested in some-
thing administrative if it was
coupled with something ar-
tistic, but I hadn't really
thought about what."
One of his many musical
contacts included Dr.
DiChiera, whom he met
shortly after arriving in
Michigan from New York in
1986. Mr. Krieger credits Dr.
DiChiera with opening up
new career opportunities for
him in the opera world.
"One of David's great
abilities is to see things that
people can do that they don't
see themselves . . . he basical-
ly put me on a whole new
path in my career. This will
hopefully lead to an eventual
position as an artistic or
general director of a public
company somewhere . . . he's
very supportive of that
future."
Dr. DiChiera says that with
a broad range of experience,
Mr. Krieger will ultimately
make a good director of a com-
pany. "Mitch is able to stretch
some of his own ad-
ministrative skills because I
believe that ultimately he
would like to run an opera
company of his own. So the
more experiences he has
working with managers and
budgetary problems, the more
it will prepare him for what-
ever future career goals he's
looking at."
Mr. Krieger's immediate
future involves a short-term
move to California where he
assumes the role of music
director of the Young Artists
Apprentice Program for
Opera Pacific. The training
program for young singers ex-
poses them to intensive work-
shop study in vocal technique,
stage movement and special-
ty classes taught by conduc-
tors and professional singers.
The apprentices also
rehearse with established ar-
tists and prepare for parts in
the chorus or other small
roles in Opera Pacific produc-
tions. "It has been a very suc-
cessful program," Mr. Krieger
says. "If you look at the list of
people who have come
MOT-
the
through

administered apprentice pro-
gram and have become
famous, you would be quite
astounded."
Some prominent names
that made their debuts or had
an early start with MOT in-
clude Richard Cowen,
Catherine Malfitano, and
Rebecca Luker, who recently
starred on Broadway in The
Phantom of the Opera.
"I think it's very impor-
