Producers Find Magic
At Colon Festival

ELIZABETH APPLEBAUM

Assistant Editor

E

veryone had some-
thing up his sleeve: a
dove, a brightly
colored handkerchief, a bou-
quet.
They all did a lot of
levitating, too, and cutting
women in half.
Each year, hundreds of
magicians and would-be
magicians appear in Colon,
Mich., for the annual "Magic
Get Together." This week-
long festival is now the sub-
ject of a National Geographic
"Explorer" special, to be
aired locally 9 p.m. Jan. 12
on WRVS (Ch. 56).
"It's Magic" was co-
produced by Sue Marx, Beth
Winsten and Pamela Conn,
local film makers who first
worked together on a docu-
mentary about the Fox
Theater. Completed in 1988,
the Fox program focused on
the history of the theater
from the 1920s to the pre-
sent and was narrated by
Bob Hope.
When the film premiered
for the Fox's new opening,
the three women met up
with one of the guests, magi-
cian Harry Blackstone Jr., a
Michigan native and regular
performer at Colon. It was
then they first had the idea
for a documentary about the
magic festival.
"In 1990 we drove to Colon
to snoop around and see
what this little festival is
like," said Ms. Marx, of Sue
Marx Films, Inc., in Detroit.
Deciding they had a
perfect subject for a docu-
mentary, the three pro-
ducers then sought funding.
Consumer's Power, based
in Jackson, provided half the
monies needed to complete
the documentary. With this

in hand, Ms. Marx, Ms.
Winsten and Ms. Conn trav-
eled to Colon for the magic
festival.
"We knew we didn't have
enough money to finish it,"
said Ms. Winsten, a New
York native. "But we said,
`Let's grab our chance while
we have it.' "
After initial filming, the
three sought additional fun-
ding to complete the docu-
mentary.
"We got this call out of the
blue from National
Geographic," Ms. Marx said.
"They were interested in do-
ing the same project (on Col-
on)."
Lugging suitcases filled
with their initial films of the
magic festival, the women
flew to Washington, D.C., for
talks with National
Geographic representatives.
The two groups agreed to
make the production a joint
effort, the first of its kind
between National
Geographic and a Michigan
company.
The result is a 16-minute
documentary focusing on the
festival, the town and its
1,200 residents as well as
the magician guests, some
1,200 of whom come each
year to Colon.
Most of the magicians are
men, but that's about all
they have in common, Ms.
Winsten said. "There are
Ph.D.s, some were fat, tall,
thin, black and white. There
was an Indian and people
from around the world
—Japan and England . . . "
"And a man from Atlanta
who owns three funeral
homes," Ms. Marx added.
The result is what the wo-
men call "Americana at its
best," and a documentary
that shows "what that week
(of the magic festival) is real-
ly like." 0
