With about 5,000 Jews at
or below the poverty line in
metropolitan Detroit, Yad
Ezra is seeing a rising need
for food among Jewish
families. The recession has
only worsened the situation
for some, Yad Ezra staff
said.
The move represented a
six-times increase of floor
space for Yad Ezra, from 700
square feet to 4,200 square
feet. The new building also
allows Yad Ezra to enlist
more volunteers and store
more food.
But, said Yad Ezra Presi-
dent Gary Dembs, the move
was accompanied with an
increase in overhead as well.
The monthly rent in the new
building is $1,500, up from
$549. Utilities, which were
included in the previous
site's rent, now cost close to
$500.
To cover these costs, Yad
Ezra, with an annual budget
of $120,000, has had to raise
additional funds from pri-
vate donors and other
sources, like federal grants.
"The costs have risen, but
even more importantly, the
need has gone up," said
Jeannette Eizelman, ex-
ecutive director. "It's busier
because of the economy."
Yad Ezra served 424
families in December, the
highest one-month total in
Yad Ezra's two-year exis-
tence. During December, the
pantry gave away close to
18,000 pounds of food.
Ms. Eizelman said that in
addition to those families
coming for food, several Yad
Ezra clients are without
electricity, some need help
filling prescriptions and
others have been evicted
from housing. 1111
