Abraham Cohen, Founded Dairy Anthony Richman Anthony Richman, Active In AZA Anthony Richman, former Detroiter of New York, died Dec. 30. He was 22. A bar mitzvah at Con- gregation B'nai David, Mr. Richman was active in AZA, with which he traveled to Israel. He was a 1987 graduate of West Bloomfield High School, where he received a varsity letter in tennis. In 1991, Mr. Richman received his bachelor's degree in history from the University of Wisconsin. There, he was head of the so- cial committee and rush chairman for the the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity. He also was active in in- tramural sports. After graduating, Mr. Richman moved to New York, where he worked as a supervisor in the finance department of Bloom- ingdale's. Mr. Richman is survived by his parents, Dr. Jay M. and Geta of West Bloom- field; brother and sister-in- law, Jeffrey and Lynn of Chicago; sister, Wendy of Detroit; grandparents, Melville and Sophie, David and Dorothy Aaron, all of Southfield. Mark Dale, Chief-Of-Staff Mark Dale, of Farmington Hills, died Jan. 5. He was 75. A graduate of Wayne State University Medical School, Dr. Dale was a former chief of staff at Highland Park General Hospital who did his residency at Wayne County General Hospital. He was past national president of Phi Delta Epsilon medical frater- nity and a member of Temple Beth El. He leaves his wife, Evelyn; Abraham (Abe) Cohen, of Windsor, Ont., died Jan. 6. He was 87. Mr. Cohen was the founder and former president of Twin Pines Dairy Ltd. and a member of Congregation Shaarey Zedek. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Rabbi Irving and Sarah of Washington Heights, N.Y.; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Niss Rappaport of Sylvania, Ohio; brother and sister-in-law, Samuel and Tillie of Windsor; sisters, Mol- ly of Windsor, Edith Goodman of Southfield, Roselyn Bassin of Sunrise, Fla., Ann Nathan of Cincinnati, Ohio, Sadie Katzman of Toronto; grand- children and great-grand- children. Robert Gordis, JTS Scholar New York — Dr. Robert Gordis, a leading rabbi and scholar at the Jewish Theo- logical Seminary of America, died Jan. 3. He was 83. Professor emeritus of Bible and philosophy, Dr. Gordis in 1985 served as chairman of the Commission on the Philosophy of Conservative Judaism. The group produc- ed Emet VeEmunah: State- ment of Principles of Conser- vative Judaism, the first publication in more than 100 years that tried to define the nature of the movement. Dr. Gordis, ordained in 1932 at the seminary, also was the author of a number of books including Koheleth: The Man and His World, Song of Songs. A teacher at Temple Uni- versity, Columbia Univer- sity and the Union Theologi- cal Seminary, Dr. Gordis was past president of the Synagogue Council of America and the Rabbinical Assembly of America. He also served as rabbi of Tem- ple Beth El in Queens, N.Y., where he created the first Conservative Jewish day school. He is survived by his wife, Fannie; sons, Enoch, Leon and David; brother, Philip; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. There's more to Jewish wisdom than chicken soup.
